The Hall went into Providence tonight and easily handled the Friars. When you combine this with their trouncing of Louisville, it appears that there may be an unexpected challenger for a spot in the Dance. We'll see if they can keep this up.

Started a thread on this, but then saw 'rooter already had one going. I've moved my post into this thread.

I'm starting to think this year's squad at the Hall could be good, but I haven't seen them. Can anyone in NJ comment?

I've moved my post into this thread. 1/24 Games of Interest « Thread Started Today at 9:22pm » -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BE: Seton Hall 88, Providence 75 OOC: Nada. I'm starting to think this year's squad at the Hall could be good, but I haven't seen them. Can anyone in NJ comment? NCAA team? I wouldn't go that far yet, although tonight's win on the road at a place that isn't easy to play does help quite a bit. The big buzz around here follows Jeremy Hazell, who is a streak shooter to the fullest who you don't want to play against if he's on, like he was all of last week. Brian Laing scores a lot of points (he might still lead the BE in PPG if I recall correctly), but, as several SHU fans have pointed out to me, he needs way too many shots to accumulate the points he gets. Harvey's still solid, but this team's issue is a complete lack of size. John Garcia isn't huffing and puffing like he did last year (I don't think I ever saw a college basketball player more out of shape than this guy was), but after him there really isn't much in terms of a frontcourt. Perimeter shooting is a difficult thing to rely on if you don't have any size to collect the misses and get stops defensively, but it can win you some games if you get can collectively hot, which is what they seem to be doing right now. I don't think this is a tourney team yet, but with the BE so wide open, they might have a chance to sneak up and steal one of the last bids that the BE gets if they can put together a few more wins on the road. With an RPI/SOS of 51/49, it's certainly possible.

Don't worry, the Hall isn't that good. They're in that large middling portion of the Big East fall somewhere between bubble at best and just missed the NIT. They still play pretty poor defense and shoot their way in and out of games.

Arizona beats WSU...
Good game to watch: UCLA at Oregon starting right now. Kevin Love comes home.

Welcome to the Wild, Wild (Big) East.
There does seem to be a big mess of teams that are good enough to give anybody a run for their money on a given night but not quite to the point where other teams should be scared of them.

SH is similar to Depaul and ND as a matchup for us, I forsee little trouble with them.

Gotta agree with you on Love. He is a beast. And, I'm not hoyafoeva/hoyaeighties, but you could see the difference between UCLA's focus on getting Love the ball and Gtown's focus on getting Roy the ball. Obviously, we're running different offenses (and Love has a green light to shoot all kinds of jumpers that Roy doesn't have), and UCLA was missing some guys that would likely have removed the need to focus so much offensively on Love, but Oregon was doing everything it could to keep Love from getting the ball, and UCLA got it to him.

Love also gets a lot of his shots off offensive rebounds as well. We need to get Roy the ball, but Roy can also help himself more.
They both use about the same % of possessions while on the court -- Roy actually gets more shots because he rarely turns the ball over.
Re: the Hall, we were an elite offensive rebounding team last year and that's the only reason we beat the Hall. Now that we aren't crashing the boards, that advantage is not as pronounced.
Add in that their talent is improved and several of their players are improved, and they are a dangerous team, especially when hot from the perimeter.

Whoa, SF...I don't think you've changed that pic since I joined the board. I don't know what to do now.

While teams like Cincinnati, DePaul and Seton Hall - with weak out of conference performances - playing .500 ball or better in conference, the NCAA tournament outlook for the conference is going to get ugly. It will be interesting to see if that continues. I don't see those guys playing themselves into the NCAAs so much as knocking other conference teams out of it.

I only saw the highlights but it looked like Deron Washington from Va. Tech wanted to take on the whole Duke team. I can't stand Duke but he looked out of control from the clips I saw. Don't they already have a kid suspended for bumping a ref?

I don't know - granted, the HALL is 11th in the BE in terms of RPI, but they are still 49th (yeah that's right 11 BE teams are in fact top 50 RPI), and at 3-3 they look ok for now. Plus scheduling wise they still have Rutgers twice, S Florida and St. Johns...

The Pirates are a formidable opponent this year... I like their tougnhness and they are one of the more streaky shooting teams I've seen.. when their shooters are on - they are tough
bet the hall moneyline last night too -- thank you Bobby Gonzo

Don't they already have a kid suspended for bumping a ref? First of all, njcoach, nice picture/avatar. I cannot emphasize that point enough. It dwarfs everything else I might say. Secondly, not that it matters, but I was sort of "side-watching" the Duke game right up until Washington got his flagrant foul. After that, I turned it off, that was the moment that sealed it for Duke, even though it was almost certain they'd win anyway. He had pretty good cause to lose his temper a bit. Not on the play that immediately preceded the flagrant foul (which looked fairly unintentional by the way), on that play, he was blatantly trying to draw a call and looked silly doing so. But they weren't calling anything on Duke down low when he had the ball. Kind of like how Harangoty got frustrated too, except that Washington had an actual, you know, reason to complain, unlike Luke. After that moment, I dedicated my complete attention to the Bruins' dismantling of Rick DiPietro. Again, can't say enough about the avatar. ;D

the funny thing about the duke game was patrick and elmore calling out washington for flopping the whole game but never said a word about duke players doing the same thing. this particular duke team is very feisty, which makes me dislike them even more. i honestly thought there was going to be a fight in that game. very hostile.

It helped but I think we had some other things going for us as well. It seems that they like Depaul and ND are guard oriented teams that emphasize offense over defense (UConn put up 96 on them in regulation) and we have the defense to shut them down, and if they don't value defense as much as us it won't be close
