Maybe its because I spent the days after the game away from the board, but I can't get over how poorly we played on Saturday. Roy was pathetic out there and our free throws and rebounding were abysmal. I don't understand how after everything this team went through last year, that our best player doesn't realize what's expected of him in order to help this team win. If we had played hard and just got beat, that would ahve been fine. In teh first half we looked like we would walk all over Memphis, even despite being down three at the half. I thought Roy was just in foul trouble and working to get other players involved. Instead, he was just too scared and impatient to do anything. It's not as though he's never seen a double team before.
I can't say that I'm excited about watching our guys tool on overmatched American and Fordham squads this weekend. Maybe that makes me a bad fan, but I don't think any of us should be satisfied with the team's and specifically Roy's effort against Memphis. And this is what makes our terrible out of conference schedule even worse. The one tournament caliber team we play completely destroys us.
I'd like to see the same focus and aggression against the good teams as we have against the bad ones (see Radford). Somebody wake me up when we play UConn or Pittsburgh. yeesh.

We were 4-3 at one point last year. The sky is not falling. We are an excellent team and JTIII wants his team peaking for the Big East Tourney and NCAAs. We learned some valuable lessons and now JTIII has a wonderful teaching tool throughout the rest of the season.
I took nothing from that game other than we played pretty fine and need to improve on some areas. Memphis is good, but let's just say I wouldn't mind facing them again in the NCAAs on a neutral court with more on the line than December bragging rights...

I'm not at all despondent about the outcome of the game. Of course I wish we would've won, but I'll take an 8-1 record and losing to the #2 team on the road in December every year. I don't get how everyone says we played so poorly. Did you watch the first half? you realize we had the lead a couple of minutes in to the second half? Memphis played lights out and GU played, overall, an average game. If this was late February, I'd be worried. If the program didn't have the track record it's developed of growing and improving as the season continues, I'd be worried. However, I don't think you can ignore what JT3 has done the past few seasons, and how he has the team playing it's best ball in Feb. and March. Maybe that won't happen this year, but, at this point, I'm not worried. I wish all you chicken littles would calm down. |

chicken little? losing a game to a great team is not cause for panic. and i am not panicked. still, the way we lost is pretty disturbing. we didn't rebound well and missed half our free throws. anyone who roots for this team should be concerned about that. our best player barely showed up. i know its early in the season and all that, but is it too much to want to see your team play well against good competition?
and the last time i checked, games aren't won in the first half. do you think carolina fans take solace in the fact that they had a ten point lead on us in the middle of the second half of our elite eight game? i doubt it. i'm sure we will be playing much better towards februaury and march as has been JTIII's m.o. for the last three seasons.
still, as a fan, i don't have to look big picture. of course it gives me solace that i assume we will be playing better later in the season, but i was still pretty disappointed by the lack of effort we displayed on saturday. as i said, its one thing to get beat. it's another thing to be tentative the whole game. that's what disappoints me.
seriously, if you don't care if we win or lose or how we win or lease in december, why not just wait until late february to tune in?

Agreed - remember, we crushed Vandy by 20 at the beginning of the season, and then they gave us one hell of a game in the NCAAs. All that matters is getting to March, and being in top shape once we get there. This game will be long forgotten. |

It's a valid question. Part of the reason is that I'm a closet romantic optimist. No matter how many times the football gets taken away from me, I'm still hoping it'll be there the next.
The other item is the value in seeing the team develop from now until later in the season. Carolina fans did take solace in their lead over GU late, and used it as motivation and to show that they were good.
Georgetown led by eight midway through the first half and, had one or two things gone our way (especially early on, threes just weren't dropping), seemed on the verge of blowing the game open. They weren't able to, and the crowd (trust me, if you weren't there, the crowd was oppressive) stayed in it. None of that seems like lack of effort to me. It reminded me a lot of the Duke game last year - a tough place to play, a close game, and a loss.

yeah, I'm still very upset. Maybe it's because I wanted it sooo bad and I really thought we could do it (and that we could have if we played better too). Believe it or not, I watched the game on the DVR the other night and somehow I think it brought a little closure since I was there for the game. Not really sure why, but it has helped me move on a little bit, and it finally seems like I'm not going to have to seek therapy  |

You need to get into at least one confontration with hifigator, RDF, hoya4eva or MrSixer. You get double credibility if you get hifigator AND RDF to be on the same side of an argument with you! JTIII will let you coach the team against Fordham if you get Brasky to agree with hifi! |

The loss didn't bother me at all.
How Roy Hibbert played SUCKED--I've gotten more frustrated with his lack of toughness/performance the more I think about that game. Just awful. It's one thing to not get it done scoring-that happens to everyone--but the fact a 7'2 player can't do a thing to help his team when he's not scoring is what disturbs me. He is about into his 4th Big East Season--and as a starter. It's not as if Roy's never faced athletic/physical frontline players. It's not as if he's never had games where he doesn't score. It's the fact he doesn't have Jeff Green to carry his crappy performances when he's not scoring. Get a rebound, be a presence--do something!
This team only goes as far as Roy is willing to develop his game. He's going to have to contribute in MANY areas for this team to be a contender--and I'm NOT talking about nationally--I'm concerned about this team and Big East play. It's not good to be a team that struggles rebounding/with physical play. Losing happens to every team--and you don't always play your best--but when you play in the most physical league in the country--and nobody is scared of your ranking--you better find ways to come together and win when things don't look good--and I trust that we'll see that from most of this team-Roy--he's the question mark for me. He doesn't have Green to hide his stinkers--like a year ago--when Roy stunk--Jeff picked up slack--and carried the team. When Jeff stunk--Hoyas lost. Well--Roy stunk against Memphis--and nobody was able to carry the team--they need Hibbert to grow as a player and contribute on the glass/defense when he's not scoring or it's going to be a disappointing exit for a special group of kids who helped get program back to a level at an accelerated rate.

Not disgruntled, but disappointed that we're "Jackin'" up so many 3's and Roy isn't being assertive.
As aggressive as Memphis plays man-to-man D, we should have had a lot more backdoor layups and hit a lot more cutters.
Our transition D was HORRIBLE!!!
I think this game was a blessing. I wish this defeat would have come at the hands of a lesser opponent. It's a lot easier to let your team know that they ain't that good when they get blown out at home to unranked ODU opposed to the #2 ranked team in the country.

It bugged me a lot. Like most people on this board I anticipated that we would go undefeated this year and continue crushing teams like we did Radford. The lack of a 50 point victory over Memphis was deeply upsetting and has left me searching for answers. If this trend (our one game losing streak) continues, we will finish the season 8-21. I guess its time to just pack it in and admit we are terrible.
I don't think any of this would happen if Roy got the ball/knew what to do with the ball more, all of us had Motorola Q's, more Charlie Daniels Band was played, the dance team danced at every time out, we had less male cheerleaders, Superman was imprisoned, and we had a true point guard like Dominick James.
Until further notice your milkshakes and sandwiches are revoked.

RDF ... I totally agree. I have been a big fan of Roy thus far this season because he's been working to get other people involved and doing a lot of little things to help us win. That said, he was an absolute no show against Memphis and that's the main reason we lost. The free throw shooting hurt as well, but how remarkable is it for your post player, allegedly one of the best in the country, to not even get to the foul line.

crazy as it sounds, there were some positives to come out of the game. ewing ft's looked good and i thought he played a decent game. did you miss chris wright's "pick up your jock" strip of rose in the open court? he also had a nice steal in the first half as well and had a nice game. freeman showed up nicely and displayed an all around offensive game. that kid is a scorer.
the hoya zone was deficient and we all know roy was in a funk. if the jtiii era has shown anything, his hoya teams improve dramatically throughout the season. i'm confident this team will be prepared to flatten the big east and make some noise come march.

Actually, chicken little, you can use "less than" before a plural noun that denotes a measure of time, amount, or distance. For example, "you have less than 100 posts" would be correct. On the other hand, "The IQ of hoya0206 is less than 100" would not be correct. If you're going to criticize grammar on an internet message board, at least get it right. Oh yeah, the word is "emailed," not "emalied." |

Thanks for the grammatical assistance. It's much appreciated. Also, as noted in my previous post, I never said the sky was falling. I said our team played poorly and that I was disappointed about that, particularly in the way Roy played. i thought this was the venue for expressing such frustrations. Again, maybe I was mistaken.
And let's not insult each others intelligence. I think the vast majority of us are pretty well educated unless we want to get into another discussion of the merits of our Georgetown degrees.
