the RUMOR is that lloyd has decided to retire and will announce his decision after the OSU game, possibly monday. in spite of his recent struggles in bowls and against osu, he led us to numerous big 10 titles and a national championship. i do think this is the correct move and i wish lloyd the best. i will miss his sarcastic halftime interviews.
next question, who takes over? the obvious choice is les miles.

I agree, it's time for him to move on, and I'm glad he can do so on his own terms.

If this is true, why doesn't he pull a John Wooden and make the announcement before the game? Perhaps that would inspire the Wolverines to a superhuman performance. You know, win one for the Carrper, or something like that.
OTOH, with tOSU now blessedly out of the BCS title game picture, I think I may be forced to root for them against Michigan. The last thing the Rose Bowl needs this season is an Oregon/Michigan rematch, and that could be in the offing if Michigan wins.

I think Oregon is destined for a bigger game than the Rose Bowl unless they really screw it up in their next three games. Which probably means (in a season like this) that that's exactly what will happen.

You know, win one for the Carrper, or something like that. Well everyone thought they'd be fired up after Bo died before the tOSU game last year, and we saw how that turned out. And then everyone thought they'd be fired up after President Ford died before the Rose Bowl, and we saw how that turned out. This is apparently not a team that gets motivated by major events. As for Carr, he was a good coach for a while, and UM fans will always have 1997 to look back on, but it's no secret that he's been getting outcoached in big games for a few years now. (Exhibits A and B: The Sweater-Vested One and Pete Carroll, respectively.) 1-5 against tOSU* and 0-3 in their last three Rose Bowl appearances is not a good standard for Michigan football, and this was probably in the cards for a little while even before the Appy St. and Oregon debacles. Can they hire Miles away? While I doubt it since LSU has the more recent success, arguably the brighter future, and perhaps an easier sell to recruits. But it's not like the chances are as slim as, say, Jim Harbaugh or Bo being named the next coach. Either way UM's going to be going through quite the adjustment after this season with Henne and Hart graduating, Mallett looking very uneven in leading the offense in his starts so far, and Super Mario looking more like a goner for the NFL every week. *To be fair about the 2006 game, to this day I can't hear the name Shawn Crable without instinctively thinking "Why the hell did you hit Smith so late, you dumbass." He's dead to me.

Michigan is not a step up from LSU at this point. um, that is totally ludicrous. considering les is a michigan man and um is the only other school actually mentioned in his contract, he would most definitely be interested. lsu is great right now, but they are just another $ec factory. michigan is on its own level, especially for coaches who have strong ties to the program. Miles would be the obvious choice indeed, but he is a little bit of a loose cannon and i think his recruiting practices have been called into question on a few occasions which isn't michigan's style. they like understated, party-line types even if you end up with sissies like lloyd carr. can't wait for rdf to chime in on the miles to michigan possibility.

He's dead to me. It makes a lot of sense for Carr to step down now, if he is thinking about it at all. Whether or not he can knock off the Buckeyes at home is a different question, but with Henne, Hart and most likely Manningham leaving, it will be a rebuilding program. Even if he thought he had another year in him, he might think that he can't dedicate the three, four or five it might take to really do it right. From what I hear, he is likely headed for a desk job, most likely in the Athletic Department. As for the replacement, Miles is the obviousl choice. I'm not positive that he will make the move, but the fact that he had an out clause written into his contract specifically for Michigan would give indication that there is strong interest. It wouldn't surprise me much. If that happens, then whoever comes in to LSU is coming in to a pretty good situation. This fun and funny college season continues ...

" think his recruiting practices have been called into question on a few occasions which isn't michigan's style"
Exactly, UM prefers to keep its recruiting practices hidden untill they are inconveniantly revealed by Maurice Taylor wrecking his ride

That's a realistic possibility. I look forward to Les Miles taking over at Michigan. His first statement will be to tell everyone that the Big 10 is really the best conference in the country, and that the SEC and Pac-10 should join a women's league.

the hot (ridiculous) internet rumor is that miles has already purchased a house just outside of AA.
