Andrew Campbell (SFS '06) will begin the sailing Olympic Trials in the Laser class tomorrow. Sailed in Newport, RI, the trials run through next Sunday, October 14th, and only the top sailor qualifies for the Olympics, so it's a very high-intensity event. Andrew won 3 national titles in the Laser class for Georgetown, and he was captain and MVP of the 2006 team, which won the national title. In addition, he was a 4-time All-American and was the first Hoya to be named College Sailor of the Year his senior year. If you're in Newport, stop by Third Beach to see the action, and make sure to follow the action on the web at www.campbellsailing.com and www.sailnewport.org/npt/m/_general/olympictrials.asp.

Campbell won two races today (Monday), giving him three wins and two 4th place finishes in 6 races (out of 33 boats competing). That appears to put him in a tie for second place after 6 races, though the results are unofficial as of now. There are likely 3 days of racing remaining, so in sports terms this is about halftime and Campbell is in good position going into tomorrow's scheduled day off. If racing continues and Campbell stays consistent, he is in very good position, especially considering a possible throw out of his one slow race result. All in all, a great start and promising trend with two bullets today.
Congrats Andrew, Hoya Saxa!

Thanks for getting the update up here, seaweed. Definitely a good day for Andrew, bouncing back after a bad result yesterday in tough conditions. Each sailor gets to throw out a race after 8 races, so Andrew will be able to toss his 20th. It seems to be shaping up to be the 2-horse race observers thought it would be, with Brad Funk battling Andrew, though Clay Johnson and Trevor Moore are still hanging tough at this point. Lots of Georgetown alums are up in Newport watching the Trials, and everyone is breathing easier after today. It's a long slog, though, as racing will continue through Sunday, with Wednesday as the only scheduled rest day (so there actually should be 5 days left with 2-3 races per day). Results are here: 208.106.141.167/npt/c/cnt/down/Thirdbeachscores.htmGo Andrew...all the way to CHINA!

Andrew got 2nd in today's first race, race 7 overall for the series. Brad Funk nipped him for 1st, making the point spread 10 points with 1 race to go before the throw out. Check out www.georgetownsailing.org for live on-the-water updates.

Andrew finished 2nd in race 9, but as it turns out Clay Johnson, who finished first was over the line at the start. So Clay receives an OCS (off course at start) and Andrew gets the 1st. The bad news is that Brad Funk was able to claw back from 7th halfway through the race to finish just behind Andrew.
So that's something of a missed opportunity to put some points between Andrew and Brad Funk, but you've got to tip your hat to Funk. He did well to claw back in that race.
There will be one more race today. Andrew now trails Funk by 2 points after the throw-out.

The tug of war continued in the 2nd race (race 10 overall) today, as Brad got by Andrew on the 2nd-to-last leg of the race, taking first to Andrew's 2nd. This is too bad, as that's the second time Funk has slipped past to steal points from Campbell, but Andrew remains 3 points back, the same difference that began the day.

With 3 days left in the regatta, racing will begin at noon today. Big breeze up in Newport, so it should be an exciting day. Follow along at www.georgetownsailing.org.

AC moved into 1st Place overall with a bullet in this AM's first race in light air off Newport. There are two more races scheduled for today and I think that will be it for the regatta. Here's hoping that Campbell can build on his lead and take the sole Olympic berth for the USA.
Rock on Hoyas, what rocks!

AC added two points to his lead with a 2nd to Brad Funk's 4th in race 13. Trying to get #14 in right now, and my mistake earlier, they are going to try to hold two more races tomorrow for a total of 16. That is not enough to trigger a second throw out, so what you see know is what you get - sprint to the finish of the regatta, 4 point advantage with maybe three races to go.
Good Luck Andrew

Virtual dead heat going into the final race, AC down one point (unofficial, still seeking confirmation, may be two), but he holds the tie breaker advantage. All he has to do is nose across in front of Brad Funk and he will be repping the US and GU at the Olympics.
Hoya Saxa to the waters off Newport...

Tied after sixteen races, Campbell owns the tiebreaker but there is a protest regarding some on course infraction - should know in 20 minutes or so if we have a Hoya Olympian!

The results page seems to say both AC and the other guy have 44 points, but list AC in 1st after 16 races. There's also something about each of them protesting the other in Race #15.
georgetownsailing.org says he's going to China. Congrats!

That's right...just got back from Newport, and you can put a fork in this one, because it's done...Andrew is in possession of the 1st place trophy. HOYA going to the OLYMPICS!!! It was a great scene at the regatta, with at least 10 Hoyas past and present there to support Andrew. It was about as nerve-wracking as possible going into the last race, when Andrew needed to get top-8 and stay ahead of Brad in order to come out ahead. Add to that the fact that the wind was blowing 16-19 knots, and it was almost unbearable. In the end, though, our man won when the protest was disallowed, and the next stop is a little place I like to call....CHINA! www.georgetownsailing.org might still be worth a looksee if you want to see how intense this regatta really was.
