YIKES.... Richard Zednik gets a skate in the neck and loses a lot of blood during a game in Buffalo. Fortunately he skated right to the bench so the trainer was able to stop the bleeding immediately. If he had gone down in the corner it might have ended very badly. The PA announcer in Buffalo said Zednik was in stable condition at a local hospital. sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=3240117

Fortunately, reports out of Buffalo General this AM is that Zednik is fine, resting comfortably.
I now have the distinction of having attended the following:
1) Clint Malarchuk gets his carotid severed on the ice in '89 against the Blues. All I remember is a couple of Sabres puking on the ice, couldn't see much from our seats in the "blues" at the old Aud, except a big red spot in the crease.
2) Kevin Everett suffers severe spinal trauma against the Denver Broncos this past September.
3) Zednik gets HIS carotid cut last night. Unlike the Malarchuk injury, however, this one is a mere 30 or 40 yards in front of our seats at HSBC.
Moral of the story, if you want to see a catastrophic injury at a sporting event, take me. Odds are apparently in your favor...

Clint Malarchuk - I had to look that one up. Pretty gruesome. There is video of it on youtube from 2 or 3 different angles. Amazingly, he was back in practice 4 days later, and back in game action a week later.
It'll be interesting to see how long it is before Zednik is back on the ice. These guys really toe that line between tough and crazy.

Good find, Stig. The NHL has the same problem as the NBA with regards to seeding inferior teams simply because they won their division. On the one hand I want to give a little credit to teams that win their division, but on the other hand the best teams should get the best seeds. Maybe keep the divisions for scheduling purposes, but move to an open-seeding format that rewards the best eight teams in the conference regardless of how they finish?

I think that teams that win the division should get a playoff berth, just not an automatic top seed.
I only mention this because, in the format Buffalo describes, it is very likely that no one from the Southeast would make the playoffs this year. Currently, the division leaders are not among the top 8 in points.
So, the Caps - or whoever - would get an automatic bid, but they would be seeded according to the number of points they amass in the regular season, compared to the other 7 conference playoff teams.
This would also help a team that has a great season, but finishes behind a team with a runaway record, like, say, Detroit. It's not the case this year, but, for instance if Nashville had a better record than the other two division winners, they could be in line for the 2 seed, instead of having to settle for 4 at best just because the team at the top of their division is a juggernaut.

Even better. So potentially a terrible division winner would get the 8th seed, a so-so division winner could get a #3 seed, and two very good teams from a great division could get the #1 and #2 seeds? I like it. Using that method, the current Eastern Conference playoff seedings: 1 - Ottawa 2 - Pittsburgh 3 - Washington 4 - Montreal 5 - New Jersey 6 - Philly 7 - Buffalo 8 - Boston Would end up looking like this: 1 - Ottawa 2 - Pittsburgh 3 - Montreal 4 - New Jersey 5 - Philly 6 - Buffalo 7 - Boston 8 - Washington The current Western Conference standings: 1 - Detroit 2 - Dallas 3 - Minnesota 4 - Anaheim 5 - San Jose 6 - Calgary 7 - Nashville 8 - Colorado Would look like this: 1 - Detroit 2 - Dallas 3 - Anaheim 4 - San Jose 5 - Minnesota 6 - Calgary 7 - Nashville 8 - Colorado TAKE ME TO THE COMMISH!!

Yeah, the automatic top-3 seed thing is a bit silly. Giving the division winner an automatic playoff berth (sort of like a minor conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament) is probably a better way to go.
The current system will result in a dogfight for 6th place in the East, since they'll actually be first round favorites over the 3rd seeded Southeast champs. In fact, the team in 5th place (or even 4th place) might also be better off by dropping down to 6th, which could lead to some bizarre scenarios in which teams want to lose their last game.

Forsberg has signed with the Avalanche. Two words: Washed. Up. This does very little for the Avs. WHO IS RUNNING THE LIGHTNING??? Dan Boyle gets a 6-year, $40 million contract?!? HE'S 31!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Insane. So much for the lockout tempering moronic spending by GM's across the league. That just drove Brian Campbell's price WAAAAAY up. The Sabres can get a kings ransom for him at this point, so its time to deal. Today is going to be fun. FOUR HOURS TO THE DEADLINE!!!

Hossa to the Habs, looks like.
I had heard Boston was going to make a play for him or for Alex Tanguay, but hopefully they won't give up Kessel or Lucic for a scorer.
Hossa will be hard to sign at the end of the year, so I'm not too disappointed. But Boston definitely could use some scoring help.
The even better news is that Patrice Bergeron is back on the ice. Probably won't play at all this year, but his career isn't over, which is the more important thing.

I just hope the Huet to Caps is a prelude to Hossa to the Habs. In Bob Gainey we trust.

Sergei Fedorov to the Caps! Does he come with a time machine?
Huet is a nice pickup, especially since they didn't give up too much to get him. Looks like the Caps' front office decided that they want to make the playoffs this season, since they picked up a few expiring contracts.

Wow. A team with black and gold uniforms finally did something against Montreal!
;D
According to Bruins War Room blog, they're in the mix for one possible trade, not involving Phil Kessel, but don't know if anything's gonna' happen. They'll probably stand pat.
EDIT: Oops. Thought the deadline was 5, not 3. Guess Boston didn't do anything.

My thoughts: 1 - Hossa to the Pens is a great move, but comes at a STEEP price. Loved what Colby Armstrong brought alongside Sid, Christensen is fine, but Espo is a supposed can't-miss prospect. If they can lock up Hossa and keep Dupuis involved, Pens win no matter how Espo ends up. 2 - Campbell to San Jose works for both teams. San Jose is in desperate need of someone to spark their rush and power play, and the Sabres needed some grit upfront. Added bonus, "Big Bear" Bernier can score a little. Problem for the Sabres is now beefing up the D-corps, which was so-so to begin with. 3 - Richards was had for a SONG by the Stars. Of course, the Lightning did get their "goalie of the future" in return. 4 - Did the Blackhawks just decide to start giving players away for nothing? And here I thought they were turning the corner. 5 - Did the Ducks just trade for ANOTHER goalie? Either way, good move to get Bergeron. 6 - Methinks Caps fans are going to like the Cooke/Giroux acquisition in a couple years... as opposed to the Federov one. EDIT: Looks like Sundin declining to waive his trade option - and thus all but end the Leafs plan to blow up the team and build from scratch (which probably would have worked rather quickly, they have some pieces to deal) - will doom Toronto for another few years. MUAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

You know, I was just thinking today, "Man, the Bruins have been playing out of their minds the last couple of weeks. . ."
Oops.
Oh well. Congrats to Ovechkin. What a great game. (and of course, he's a Hoya fan, so another reason to like him)
