So in a "games of mild interest" Yale beats the unsinkable Penn tonight. With a Cornell loss (thanks Nevada), this puts Yale in first place in the Ivy.
Now I know what you're saying and it begins with "Big" ends with "Deal" and has some expletive in between. But I believe this is the first time in five years any team not named either Princeton or Penn has even BEEN in first in the Ivy . And if this bodes well for a possible champion other than those two, it would be a first since 1988 (Princeton started the streak in '89 and as I, um, recall got crushed by a #1 seed that year).
In fact, Princeton or Penn have won the Ivy 42 of the past 45 seasons.
So it might not be so noteworthy but I know there are some Ivy connections out there in the fanbase as well as the coaching staff. Lock and move if you wish.

This is not surprising considering that Penn's long-time coach left for Temple, and PU has been garbage since JT3 left. The level of play in that league as a whole has gone down considerably since the late 1990's. Back then, the Ivy with an NCAA bid could at least be considered seriously for an upset, but that is in no way imaginable right now.

In 2002 Yale finished the season tied with Penn and Princeton. Yale then beat Princeton in the first round of a tiebreaker tournament, before losing to Penn.

Back then, the Ivy with an NCAA bid could at least be considered seriously for an upset, but that is in no way imaginable right now. There is actually a view that the other Ivies have improved to catch up with Penn and Princeton. Basketball is seen as a sport where they could possibly compete, not at the highest levels, but at least in the territory where the mid-majors live. Football is the sport with great tradition in the Ivy League, but the scale of football makes it prohibitive for the Ivies to beat anyone outside of the Patriot League. Basketball offers much better odds, and schools like Yale, Brown, Cornell, and Columbia have made serious strides to improve their programs. At the same time, Princeton is in serious turmoil and Penn may have difficulty replicating what Dunphy was able to do, so Ivy hoops has become multi-polar.

And I thought this was a Laura Nyro thread.... Huh? Just because she wrote the song (may she RIP)? Maybe it's supposed to be a Three Dog Night thread. Jeremiah was a bullfrog!

Yale (2nd Ivy, 8-3) travels to Penn (1st Ivy, 10-1) tonight. The Elis need a win in Philly and another Quaker loss to win the league.
