Here is a true story without any embellishment:
We were on the way to our seats in the upper deck - section PP. It was during our first TD drive. Percy Harvin made a nice play and all my buddy Greg said as we were walking around the stadium towards our seats was something like "Yeah!!! You better get used to it. Four more years of that coming. That's a TRUE FRESHMAN Percy Harvin!!"
Now granted, you probably won't make any new friends that way, but still .... certainly nothing to get worked up about. Understand we weren't standing around taunting anyone in particular. We were walking at a relatively swift pace around to our seats. We wanted to walk on the inner ring so we could see the game rather than under the stands.
Two cops came up from behind us and stopped us and said "You do that again I'm going to arrest you." I thought maybe one of us bumped somebody or something that I hadn't seen. But no, it was just the cheering. Greg asked him something like "what did I do" and the cop said he was trying to start a fight. Sorry, if that kind of cheering is "trying to start a fight" ... especially when said to no one in particular and as you are walking rather quickly to your seats then they would have to arrest 106,000 people.
Anyhow, "Greg said something like I'm sorry, I was just cheering ..." and the officer cut him off and said I better not see you do that again. Greg said "don't worry you won't see me again, I'm just on the way to my seat." The cop then bowed up and said "What did you say?" There is no doubt in my mind that that cop was totally out of line. In fairness to him, maybe ... just maybe he misheard something but in all honesty there was nothing more to it than what I have said here. When he bowed up and got within inches of Greg, I have zero doubt that the cop was in fact the one "trying to start a fight." Way to set a good example pig. (Sorry about that last comment to all the many fine officers out there on both sides of the field .... this just wasn't one of them.)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just a couple of quick questions:
Do you think cheering in such a manner should be off limits? Do you think yelling "Yes, get ready for four more years ... that is true freshman Percy Harvin!" crosses the line?
I know you can't give any valid opinion on the tone and demeanor of the officer without having seen it in person, so I won't ask of his intentions, but from what I have said do you think that he was legitimately trying to quell a situation or start one? In other words, do you think it was just prudent action to prevent behavior from escalating or not? If it had ended after the first words then I would buy that. But when he got up the second time in Greg's face who had done absolutely nothing I was pretty sure that he was just looking for any opportunity to justify arresting or at least detaining us.
