The Shrine Bowl has been in SC for the past 4 or 5 years. Started out in Rock Hill and moved to Spartanburg, first at Wofford's stadium (it is very nice now, Panthers use it for night scrimmages at training camp and they redid all the schools facilities when they came in - Jerry Richardson went there) and now at Dorman HS which has a stadium better than many colleges.
A friend of my family recently retired as head coach and he was the SC coach for the Shrine Bowl 2-3 years ago.

Isn't this the time when I am supposed to b!tch about someone hijacking my thread about top high school qb's of all time by directing it towards some specific interstate contest between the Carolinas? Don't worry guys, I'm fine with it .... unlike "some" people.

Even though some of us do find reports about other schools a nice diversion every now and then, the die-hards are gonna hate regardless because this is a Hoya Board. All I can say is that you didn't come across like a total Edited when you started posting here. That definitely helps your case. If you post interesting stuff like this, and on the right board, most people won't bother you. I'm sure a lot of us didn't know about Vernon Maxwell's high school background and found it interesting that he was a good high school football player as well. Just roll with the punches, and maybe we'll talk to your mom and Buff's mom to arrange a 'Play-Date'.

What sums up HS "recruiting rankings" is the name Ronald Curry. Why do I bring him up? He was rated the #1 Football player in country and was ridiculously awarded top basketball player in the country. The guy wasn't even the best QB prospect in Hampton, VA---Michael Vick was a SR the same year Curry was, and if you know Hampton sports, Hampton HS is considered the power and others are a notch below--so Curry played on the "stacked" team--which often happens in HS and why so many analysts make the mistake of hyping kids--they forget you are projecting how they will be--not what they are doing against inferior/unbalanced playing field. As a basketball player, Curry was pure manure. That kid wasn't as good as Jon Wallace is now--at any point in his career. I'm not saying he should've been either--but to award him that honor is a joke when the only person to EVER be even considered as a threat to that honor is Allen Iverson--who was a great, great, GREAT Football player--not so much as a QB though--he was raw/awkard, but one hell of an athlete. Leading your team to State Titles in Both sports when Bethel HS had no reputation as a powerhouse team/school is an awesome accomplishment. It's almost as if those who followed HS FB and BB recruiting awarded Curry for Iverson's achievements instead of watching Curry actually play. Curry deserved ever honor in FB as he was a beast on both sides of the ball & special teams. besides Tommy Reamon(Vick's old HC) I highly doubt you would find 1 soul in the area that would say Vick was better than Curry in H.S., that's not to take anything away from Vick as he was still a 4 or 5 star recruit. Hampton is a quality HS when it comes to FB, but I wouldnt call them a Natl power--JMO I still think Curry wouldve been a nice QB if he didnt get hurt so much or NC kept 1 OC during his time there--he had atleast 3 & Vick only had 1 & even "reshirted" his Fr. year.

I always said he should have gone to Florida State. With that wide open offense and him being surrounded by that talent, he would have had no choice but to be successful at QB. As far as basketball, if football didn't interfere, he could have been a very decent college basketball player. He just wasn't meant to be a two sport star...at least not at Carolina.

He'd have received no coaching at FSU--and it's pretty funny when the best QB they've had in NFL was a guy who they benched and didn't start more then 3/4 games--Brad Johnson.
Curry was overrated. He was/is a fine athlete--that doesn't make you a great QB. He'd been better off going somewhere they teach you how to play QB and in the ACC--his best choice at the time was the initial one he made--UVA. Aaron Brooks is terrible, but he's a multi-millionaire being terrible. Matt Schaub is going to start in the NFL sooner rather then later--likely due to being traded but he can play. Curry would've received coaching at UVA. At UNC, it was like FSU--just backyard FB with no clue how to run an offense.
As for him as a basketball player--he was decent but if you can't shoot, you are a liability. He was King Rice in a larger/more athletic frame.
I'm just happy he ended up in NFL though--great athlete.
