According to the Duke Basketball Report, the school will retire Shelden Williams and J.J. Redick's jerseys. Next season. That's 13 jerseys, 12 since 1986. Duke standards seem to be pretty loose compared to their neighbors. At Carolina, a jersey isn't retired unless it's a national player of the year. (They've got seven.) There are also 31 "honored jerseys" for players with a minimum two time consensus All-America honors. www.dukebasketballreport.com/alumni/index.cgi?868

Here's the list of retired Duke player jerseys: www.dukeupdate.com/Records/legends.htmTwo of the recently retired jerseys have been for old-timers: Art Heyman played in Durham from 1961-3, and Jeff Mullins played there from 1962-4. There has been an extremely quick turnaround for the retirement of every other player jersey on the list, so that practice isn't uncommon. But it certainly cheapens the process, IMO. Also, retiring Shelden Williams' jersey is somewhat of a joke to me -- is Cherokee Parks next on the list? Williams' numbers are skewed by the lack of four-year quality post players in college basketball (and especially the ACC), and I think you can only base the retirement of Williams' jersey on his career stats.

FWIW, Williams' career scoring average is comparable to that of Othella Harrington:
Shelden: 1928 pts, 139 games (13.87 avg) Othella: 1839 pts, 132 games (13.93 avg.)

Duke's just retiring the jersey and not the number right? or is that NC I'm thinking of that does that and has an obscene number of jerseys hanging from the rafters.
