Yawn.
(Not directed at you, Pete, but the sudden national obsession with an animal's leg. As Willybuns would say, "It's a stupid horse.")

Buff, I agree with your sentiment to a degree and I thought the coverage of the Preakness was pathetic. All of the cameras were focused on Barbaro and I talked to a lot of people who were watching the race at a bar and had no idea who won the race for about 5 minutes after the race. It was too loud in there to here the audio and all they could tell from the video clips were that Barbaro pulled up lame.
In any case now though, I think it is a bit of a sad story. I feel bad for the owner who invested all that money and has lost his direct investment and now looks to lose any chance at breeding as well as stud fees. As far as the horse is concerned though ... like you put it ... "It's just a stupid horse."

might be just a stupid horse but the "bullets" in that horse's "gun" are worth a lot of coin!

As far as the horse is concerned though ... like you put it ... "It's just a stupid horse." I completely disagree, and I can't believe you feel "bad" for these rich chumps. Millions of people lose millions in investments every day. These people are no different. They knew the risks of investing in a fragile commodity, and they took the plunge anyway. The investment isn't without risk. I'm supposed to feel bad for them because rather than be multi-millionaires they're stuck being random millionaires? Please. Spare me. Awww, poor rich man lost his horsey. If the investment is that important, chop off his nugget bag now, freeze his little guys, and get ready for some artificial horse insemination. If Jackass taught us anything, its that there's a lucrative market in being the one who actually inseminates the equine. If anything, I feel "bad" for the horse... HE'S the one going to have to be killed. But I feel no more for him than I do for a rabid pit bull who mauls someone, or a deer who's on the verge of death after being struck by a car, or a family pet who's getting old and has hip problems. Just another animal who needs to be put down. Like with any pet, I'm sure the owners feel bad and I'm sure I would if it were my dog or pony or whatever, but the fact remains this is a non-story, maybe worthy of a signing-off mention.

I'm going to refrain from responding to some of these comments, because I think I might blow a gasket. Let's just say I hate it when this happens.

Who wants to set the over under on time between when Barbaro is euthanized (shot - for those of you playing at home) and when a piece of Barbaro shows up on eBay?

Isn't there a cute little blonde girl who's gone missing somewhere we can all "worry" about and "pray for"?
Quick, someone send a group of high school girls to the Caribbean...

When people like me don't give a rats ass about some rich guy's horse that has to be put down? Or when people like hifi feel bad for the rich guy because he's losing out on a few million? Or when a horse has to be killed because a bunch of dopes feel the need to domesticate an otherwise wild animal and put a little Spanish guy on top and run it ragged for money?

I can tell when I'm being baited, but a response is going to have to wait for awhile. Off point, can anyone explain how a promotion for thoroughbreds.com ended up at the top of this thread?

Seriously, rooter, I'm not trying to bait you. Honest. I just find the whole institution of horse racing a bit ridiculous, thus my contempt for it slipping into my posts. None of that was directed at you by any means. Am very curious as to your response, and what I or others may have said that has you so riled up.

It's past 7 pm on Friday, and I would like to go home, so I will attempt to keep this reasonably brief.
First, as to Americans generally, it seems that much of the country has adopted Barbaro as their surrogate pet. Americans love horses. If you don't, that's your prerogative, and it's no big deal. But personally, I come at this from a totally different direction.
I love horse racing. I've loved it since I was a kid, and in what has to be a reversal of the norm, I even got my parents interested, thanks to my incessantly nagging them to take me to the track. But I'm not a gambler. Never have been, and don't ever expect to be. What I love is the challenge of the handicapping, and watching the horses run. When we had that thread on the most memorable sports events we had attended, number 2 on my list was attending the Kentucky Derby.
So I have an affinity for the horses. At the same time, I know they are putting themselves at risk solely for the entertainment of others, and I hate it when they get hurt. But particularly, I hate it when it happens to a champion horse. Barbaro isn't just another horse. He won the Derby, which is still the most important race run in this country, and he won it by the widest margin in over 60 years. He also was unbeaten, and he had proven himself already on both turf and dirt. I can't remember when that last happened with a horse in the spring of his 3 year old year. So Barbaro is special. As a result, even knowing he can't race again, I would hope that he will be saved to pass his genes on, and to have a long and happy life.
Just two last points. I'm sure Barbaro is insured. Nevertheless, his owners are sparing no expense to attempt to save him. That's to their credit. Finally, anybody who watched the Preakness and didn't know that Bernardini blew away what was left of the field simply wasn't paying attention. Yes, the focus was understandably on Barbaro after the race was over, but the coverage of the race didn't stop after Barbaro broke down. What it did do was result in most people who were watching, including myself, thinking, oh, , who cares who wins now? And that's also perfectly understandable.
