Not sure if any of you saw the interview with Big Ben back during the season, but he was talking about how despite the pleas of teammates, coaches and the entire Steelers organization he wasn't going to wear a motorcycle helment because of some moronic macho reasons. Wonder what tune he'll be singing now: sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2480830

I don't know if he'll be doing much singing for the near future:
“According to a police source, Roethlisberger suffered a broken jaw, broke his left sinus cavity, suffered a 9-inch laceration to the back of his head, lost many teeth and has severe injuries to his knees from hitting the pavement. A plastic surgeon has been called in, the source said.”)
Though I'm not sure why this makes him a jerk.

Well on the one hand, if you're a fan of the Steelers and spend money on them and have emotional equity in the franchise (let alone you're an employee of the Rooney's as coaching or front office) then Ben is a MONSTER jerk. What kind of an idiot rides around without a helmet these days (not counting morons from The U.)?
On the other hand, I figured people would have understood my use of the word "jerk" simply to mean "dope" or "chump" or any other word that seeks to convey the feeling of "what a complete and utter moron!!!"
Don't get me wrong, I hope he recovers fully without any serious injuries, but c'mon... what a jerk.

Just saw the bit on ESPN News. What makes this even more laughable in my opinion is that the footage shown shows Ben's bike, and it isn't some big, badass Harley you cruise around in looking sweet. Its one of those piece of junk crotch-rockets (looked like a Ducati) built for speed and only speed.
Again, like I said I hope he recovers fully and I wish him the best, but to be riding around in one of those things without a helmet - which he considers a big macho thing to do - he kind of got what was coming...

Well, I agree with your expanded definition of "jerk." I know you have to live your life and the same qualities that allow you to stand in against a blitzing linebacker probably lead you to ride around on a motorcycle without a helmet, but I agree with Terry Bradshaw on this one. Why risk it?

I wonder if he would exercise his mas machoness by facing a blitzing linebacker without a helmet. What he did makes about as much sense.

According to the doctor in the family, my wife, they have a name for these things: donor-cycles. I'll never ride one of those things unless it's just around the neighborhood because I've seen too many cases where it's not even the rider's fault, yet it's the rider who ends up paralyzed or dead.

KC - curious: does your wife mean those crotch rockets in particular, or motorcycles in general? It would be interesting (at least I think so) to compare the stats for motorcycle accidents and see what kind of bikes are most involved in accidents. And you're 100% right... motorcycle drivers can be driving PERFECTLY, not speeding, etc.... and they're the ones who get clipped and end up maimed.

I had some clients riding a Harley down the road and they went to pass a truck (legally) and the truck turned into them. He's a paraplegic and she's a quadraplegic.

Of course, this presents you with a perfect opportunity to go on the Florida board and plead for prayers for your clients.

I hope Ben has a full recovery. Prayers for him during his recovery. Yeah, I hope he's back just in time to get abused by Carson and the Bengals. The last decade or so would suggest that God is not a fan of the orange and black, but this seems a lot like Karma for the cheap shot by Kimo in the playoffs.
