They run this thing by conference call? Really? For serious?
Well, I can't get excited about THAT! Sounds way too much like something people have to do at a regular job. Even Fantasy Leagues have a more sophisticated method than conference call.
Fix that up, Selig!

I think moving the draft to around the All-Star break is a great idea. We were in the College World Series last year and made it to the final series. It is nothing but a distraction. It really makes very little sense. There are 16 teams still alive in the season right now vying for one of the 8 spots in the CWS. Why should such a distraction happen now?

Incidentally for anyone intersted, the left-handed ace from Tennessee -- I think his name is Adam Hochever -- was the first pick in the draft. I know that Florida had two of its star recruits selected in the first two rounds, which typically means that they won't set foot on campus this year. We also had a football recruit Derrick Robinson selected first in the fourth round. He had some ungodly ridiculous speed time. His time down the line from the batter's box to first base would have been the fastest of any guy in the Majors this season! Wow. On another note, I am very surprised that Matt LaPorta hasn't been picked yet. He led the Nation in homers last season with 26. He only hit 14 this year, but he was sidelined for nearly a month with a pulled oblique muscle -- the same injury that Albert Pujols sustained on Saturday.

Tigers drafted so far: Tyler Colvin picked #13 overall (1st rnd) by Chicago Cubs Jason Berken just selected 6th rnd (#175 overall) to Orioles Josh Cribb picked 8th rnd (#227) by the K.C. Royals Steven Richard picked 8th round (#231) by Seattle Mariners Andy D'Alessio 10th rd (#293) to the L.A. Dodgers Stephen Faris, 12th Round (#363) to the Padres Drew Fiorenza, 15th Round (#441) to Seattle Mariners
3 HS signees signed so far too... 1 of them is gone, the other two are iffy on pro or college IMO.

I like this way better. 17 rounds in day? No annoying, excessive chit chat? Fine by me.
LaPorta dropped because he's generally considered unathletic, with a slower bat than you'd think and no pro position.
The last Hoya -- and only since 1960 -- to grab a cup o' joe is Sean Maloney, who last played in 1998. He was selected in the 19th round of the 1993 draft.
The two best Hoyas were turn of the century -- Art Devlin and Doc White. White was a White Sock who led the league in ERA in '06 (and won a World Series, beating the Cubs, who had the best record ever) and has some HOF on his comparable list.
Art Devlin played for McGraw's Giants (and thus has a ring as well, I think). He was a third basemen back when third basemen were effectively second basemen (more of a defensive focus than today).

I can't believe Andrew Miller fell to the Mariners at #5 and they passed on him anyway. Allegedly huge demanded signing bonus aside ($8-10 million), it's not like he can refuse to sign and go back to college for another year. The best prospect, far and away, joins Bonderman and Verlander in Detroit. The Tigers are going to have a very strong rotation in a couple years if they can keep their current young arms in place.
All in all, I hate the Mariners' senior execs. I'm going to go hit my head against a wall for ten minutes.

Well, "Steven Richard picked 8th round (#231) by Seattle Mariners" is dating a Hoya alum's little sister, if that counts for anything. I would've met him at said Hoya's wedding a few weeks ago, but he had the gall to skip it for the ACC Tournament.

He was pretty heralded transferring in to Clemson from Maine this year but not sure he lived up to the hype in most fans' eyes. Maybe being the closer after being the ace last year was an adjustment or maybe the fans just set their expectations too high. Wonder if he'll come back to school for one more year.

I'm not sure anyone from this year goes Top 10 last year. Something to keep in mind.

Sean Maloney: www.baseball-reference.com/m/malonse01.shtmlI don't know if there's been anyone since then, but Sean's a good guy. Had to give him his due credit.

Doc White was a Hoya? This is very cool information, SF! A link between my Hoyas and my Sox! Perhaps I knew this at one time, but if so, I probably forgot it decades ago.

Buff, thanks for that update on Hoya draftees. SF, I don't think LaPorta dropped for the reasons you suggest. I think that there might be health concerns, since he missed almost a month. His average dropped quite a bit too. I think he hit .320 last year and only .259 this season. But he is a talent. He has real power. He hits to all fields and has a very good eye. Perhaps the most notable quality however has been his improvement in defense. He came up as a catcher but was in the same recruiting class as one of the best defensive catchers in the SEC in decades -- Brian Jeroloman, who was selected in the sixth round by the Toronot Blue Jays. In any case, LaPorta was pinch hitter/designated hitter his freshman year. He had 15 homers in about 120 at bats. Like mentioned before, last year as a sophomore he led the Nation with 26 dingers and added another 14 this year in spite of the fact that the Gators didn't make it to the post season and he sat out almost a month with the injury. He played first base the past two seasons and really developed defensively. I wouldn't be surprised if he makes it to the bigs within 3 seasons. The Red Sox got an absolute steal getting him in round 14, but honestly I am hoping that he decides to return for his senior season.
Incidentally, I got Hochever's first name wrong. It is Luke not Adam.

Didn't notice that SF had posted about Sean-O before I did. Damn. That's, like, the first time in the history of the board where I actually thought I had some news to share and someone beat me to it. That does it. I'm sticking with my usual inane drivel from now on. No exceptions. Still, Sean once gave up a 3-run shot to Ken Griffey in Seattle. I'm sure it wasn't a highlight for him at the time, but looking back years later, how cool is that? Would've been even better if Junior's body hadn't broken down after leaving the Mariners. He'd be up there with Bonds threatening the top two.

It is Luke not Adam. Well, it's what I heard from a friend who knows some scouts. So it is like eighth-hand. He's got real power, but there are concerns about his body (i.e. athleticism), and bat speed. He'll end up at 1B, and 1B only, so you've got to be able to really rake. He didn't this year.
