I recognize the names of the 12 guys who were on the last WC roster. I am surprised not to recognize that name of Taylor Twellman. I also certainly recognize Bobby Convey, older brother of GU rising senior Tim.

Twellman isn't on the WC roster and I'm a little upset about it - if we are going to play a 4-4-2 and I expect us to Landon (Prima)Donovan can't play next to McBride (sort of like how he can't play in Europe without getting homesick - seriously grow a pair) because he's more useful as a ball distributor from the front of the midfield diamond - this would be especially effective against teams with tight defense inside the 18 like Italy and Czech Republic. I guess we are hoping Johnson recovers and takes the spot. Another player not included was Specter (i think that's his name) he's 19 and STARTS for Charlton Athletic - i mean seriously the guy starts on a pretty good side in the EPL - why isn't he on the roster?? Finally, if soccer cancer Frankie Hejduk sees the pitch I am going to punch my TV - why is he on the team over Twellman and Specter?

Well you won't ahve to worry about hedjuk the day after the announcement of the team he was replaced by albriet because hedjuk pulled his ACL or soemthign like that.
The only two real surprises/ debatable picks for the roster were Ching who was chosen over twellman. I think both are viable options and I don't really mind ching's inclusion over twellman. The good thing about twellman not being on the team is it Editedes off the terps. The other was conrad over berhalter. Berhalter has the edge in experience but conrad is a very good defender as well. The rest were all pretty predictable.

I don't cheer injuries but our chance of making it out of the group stage just got better.

Spector dislocated his shoulder a couple weeks ago, ending his shot (albeit a long shot given our defensive depth) at this World Cup. If he keeps improving he and Onyewu will be the core of our defense in 2010.
As for the two moves HSB mentioned, I would have preferred Twellman over Ching, but most of TT's national team goals have come in friendlies against other countries' B teams. Conrad should definitely be on the team over Berhalter, but that's just a personal preference since I haven't seen much of Berhalter in Europe.
My question (and I know this is standard practice) is why take three GKs? Unless he performs disastrously, Keller is going to see almost all the minutes, so why not take Keller and Hahnemann and free up a spot for either Berhalter or Twellman?

I think you take the 3 GKs out of deference to our depth at the position. I mean Keller is the best goalie in the world, but Howard and Hahnemann have started for two of the best sides in Europe.

True, but Howard made a mess of his second season with United and is the no. 2 now. I'd like to see him either regain his old form or move on to a club where he can get more starting time because in 2010 he'll probably have to be the starting keeper for the US. For the time being, I'm glad to see Keller in goal for another Cup, especially since I remember losing a JV soccer game to his alma mater 13-0 once. That was fun.
PS: SPH, I still have a Beat Cuse banner in my room. Do you want it back?

I believe( i think i read somewhere) that howard will be moving on to another team after this season. The reason for 3 keepers is injuries. You always need a back up in case of emergency. They only have to have one replacement behind each field player because you'd have to loose 5 defenders to run out of defensive subs but you just have to loose two people and then you'd be out of keepers.

HSB - another team in EPL, Europe, or MLS?
Btw, my team Zenit St. Petersburg forced their coach out in order to make a run at getting Dick Advocaat who is leaving the South Korean national team after this world cup year - it seems like a sort of lateral move to drop a noted Czech coach for Advocaat - does anyone know anything about him?

Howard has been linked to a potential loan move to Everton.
as for Advocaat he's had several other managemant jobs including the Dutch national team and the UAE national team. He played for a while but nowhere of note.

We are not missing out on anything in Spector. I was in London a few weeks ago and saw Fulham (Bocanegra and McBride play there) play against Charlton (Spector's current team, although he is on loan from Manchester United) at Craven Cottage (Fulham's ground). Specter was terrible. Although he did make a few nice tackles, on the whole he was not good enough to guard his assignments, which often was McBride. When he got the ball, he never seemed to know what to do with it, and either gave the ball away or cleared it out of play. And Boa Morte, who scored both of Fulham's goals in the 2-1 win, made Spector look silly on the occasions when they were together.
I really hope Eddie Johnson is bakc in time and in good shape to play in the WC. I really feel like he is the future of American soccer (not that primadonna Adu, who I doubt will ever become anything like the player American soccer fans hope he will be) as he is the first to combine basketball point guard like athleticism with the skill of a good striker. I also am a big fan of McBride, and feel that even though he is getting up there in age, that he will be an important part of the USA's successes.
Keeper I am not worried about at all. If there is one thing that American's have always produced well, it is goalkeepers. Even with Freidel retiring from International football, Casey Keller is a proven winner, Tim Howard didn't find his way onto Man U by accident, and Hanneman has been solid this year in helping Reading (along with Bobby Convey) get into the top flight of English football. There are about 10 other guys in the MLS right now who I would also trust to put the gloves on, and I think that after the WC, more of them will be getting offers from top European clubs.
And Hejduk is from my home town and played for the same youth club that I did, so I take the 5th on making any statements concerning him. :-) But it appears that Hejduk is injured anyways, so Chris Albright is there instead.
Only complaint is that Chris Armas is not on the roster. I think he is the closest thing the USA has to a Claude Makalele type defensive midfielder, who sures up the back and sets the pace of play, and while you don't really notice him when he is on the field, you certainly notice his absence.

That's not so bad, at least you are aware of the existence of the sport, something George W. Bush wants us to believe he was not as a child, despite the fact his father had captained the team at Phillips Andover Academy, the same school he would go on to attend. www.latimes.com/sports/soccer/la-sp-soccol8may08,1,814202.story?coll=la-headlines-sports-soccer

According to Arenas, from a Chicago Trib. article, Armas was left off the WC roster because he is still recovering from an injury and isn't at full strength right now: Arena said it was tough not to pick Armas, whose Cup dreams were ended for a second time by a knee injury. "He has been part of a long rehabilitation process since last October and has done a remarkable job to play 90 minutes this past weekend," Arena said. "Chris needs more time. "He is an alternate and has the month of May to continue to move forward as a player and position himself if there's a call to be the next guy." One other player left off the 23-man roster because of injury was Arlington Heights native Jonathan Spector, whom Arena singled out as one of the players who could have made the roster if healthy. chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/soccer/cs-0605030167may03,1,6260304.story?coll=cs-soccer-print
