Does anyone out there follow cycling? The Giro starts this weekend, and Basso is going to take the Maglia Rosa.

This is about all I know of cycling:
Lance Armstrong: "I've been watching the dodgeball tournament on the Ocho. ESPN 8. I just can't get enough of it. Good luck in the tournament. I'm really pulling for you against those jerks from Globo Gym... I think you better hurry up or you're gonna be late." Peter La Fleur: "Uh, actually I decided to quit, Lance." Lance Armstrong: "Quit? You know, once I was thinking of quitting when I was diagnosed with brain, lung and testicular cancer all at the same time. But with the love and support of my friends and family, I got back on the bike and won the Tour de France five times in a row. But I'm sure you have a good reason to quit. So what are you dying of that's keeping you from the finals?" Peter La Fleur: "Right now it feels a little bit like... shame." Lance Armstrong: "Well, I guess if a person never quit when the going got tough, they wouldn't anything to regret for the rest of their life. Well good luck to you Peter. I'm sure this decision won't haunt you forever."

I like Savoldelli's chance to repeat, but I think Team CSC is way too strong for anyone to seriously challenge Basso. Any team with Julich, Voigt, and Sastre as support riders is just unfair.

Ivan Basso is a beast, especially on the mountains, which this particular tour is geared for. I expect he will take it (being in Italy and all), unless he wants to hold back for the top prize. He may be Italian, but France is still the big stage and he will be the favorite there as well.
He and Lance had a couple great duels in the mountains. I don't know if anyone else is up to his caliber there.
On another note.....PINK?!?!?!?
Geez Italy, only you could out-wimp the French. Plus 4 stages in BELGIUM this year, of all places, then you elect a Communist PM. My Abruzzese grandfather would not be pleased. And this place once ruled the entire known world....go figure.

I read this thread a little while ago, and figured I was done with it...I know/care nothing about cycling. But lo and behold, I see that Boz has made the most recent post, so I expect it to be worth a read, only to find that it was for the most part a SERIOUS, ON-TOPIC POST.
Incredibly disappointing. You should know better. Do NOT let it happen again.

They are starting it in Belgium to remember the 136 Italians who died in a Belgian mining accident 50 years ago. Also, since there is interest, who is going to win each jersey Overall, Points, King of the Mountains, and who will win the opening prologue? If there is interest, we can pick a winner for each stage. Overall - Basso Points - Bettini (Petacchi and McEwan won't finish, and McGee will go for the overall) KOM - Cunego and I'm taking Savoldelli in the prologue.

I bought a Maglia Verde, but beyond that I really don't follow cycling. Did a little bit of biking in Tuscany this past semester as I was studying in Florence, only to find out that I in no way deserve to be wearing the Maglia Verde (king of the mountains).

On that note, though, anyone know when the Vuelta is?

Petacchi fell and is riding like he's hurt, there goes his chances at the points jersey. I think Robbie can win again today.

Geez Italy, only you could out-wimp the French. I was just wondering today, how did France end up being host to such major sporting events. Of all the major clay court tennis tournaments in Europe (Roma, Hamburg, Monte Carlo, Berlin), somehow the French ended up the most famous/important one. As already noted, while there are other grand tours, the one in France is by far the most famous (I'm fairly amazed there were more than 2 other people on this board who knew what either the Giro or Vuelta was). Also, is a pink jersey any worse than a yellow one? I won't even go into the one with red polka dots.
