sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/photo?slug=xvil10201152126.georgetown_villanova_xvil102&prov=apShould the link fail you, you can find this picture within the AP Recap DFW has on the front page, or in the Yahoo! slide show. Great job by the photographer who took the picture. I heard Rich say Sumpter was credited for the foul on the play, so my guess is he raked Owens across the arm trying for the block. Also looks like Ray was getting a little shove of his own in. I'll be watching the Comcast nightly show tonight (read: flipping during the Falcons game) to see if they show any highlights. That or the local newscasts,, I figure that's our best bet.

from my perspective on the floor about 25 feet away, rays shove from below altered the shot, dont know who they gave the foul to.

I think they called the foul on Sumpter, but it definitely looks like Ray fouled as well.

It sure looks like without SOME kind of foul, the shot goes in, easy, from that picture.

I actually saw some really low grade highlights on comcast that looked like they were from a personal camcorder (zoomed in way too much) and it looked like DJ still should have made the lay in. But it was really quick so I didnt see how hard he was hit.

Actually per Maryland's contract and Gary William's insistance all Georgetown highlights are shot on low grade cam corders ... just an FYI.

As much as I despise Big East officials, they didn't cost us the game. We blew it.
That having been said, though, there were two bones of contention here.
1. After the Sheridan dunk to tie it, your guy STEPPED IN BOUNDS. IF the officials are going to blow their whistles in the final second or two, be consistent. It would have been our ball under our basket.
2. The call at the other end was probably a foul, I'll grant you that, but 9 times out of 10, in REAL leagues like the Big 10, S.E.C., where refs aren't a bunch of Editedant game-stoppers, they swallow their whistles and wait for OT.
That is what should have happened here. The think that irks me and got the crowd ticked off at the Pavilion was the double-shot by the officials.
Again, they DIDN'T win or lose this game...We lost it and you deserved to win. But I hated to see it win on a no-call of an obvious major violation, then fail to swallow the whistle in the last second.
That s*cked. Still, as said before, congratulations -- you won and you've got a surprisingly good, very exciting ballclub that should provide you some major memories this winter.

if the guy stepped inbounds, I could definitely see a beef there. I totally disagree with the "swallowing the whistle" stuff that makes the NHL such a farce at the end of games. Call the game consistently, buzzer to buzzer, including the first and last seconds. On that last play, the guy driving was fouled -- if the foul cost the score that would win the game, swallowing the whistle would be a horrible sin of omission. If they saw the play on the other end, and wanted to do a 'makeup' i could see it, but if they didn't see the baseline thing, the ref has to make the call.
To tell you the truth, I've seen some atrocious officiating in Big Ten and ACC games, too. And these days many of the officials cross over a variety of conferences. Guys like Higgins and Valentine and others make awful calls all over the country. The only rule I've ever observed in the ACC is that if a Duke player flops, it's a foul on the opposing offense; if a Duke player is breathed on while driving the lane, it is a foul on the defense.

I agree CD, swallowing a whistle on an obvious foul (which it was) is as much the refs deciding the game as blowing the whistle on a ticky tack foul.
That said, if Ashanti did step out, VU had a gripe. Even though that would be ticky tack.

That said, if Ashanti did step out, VU had a gripe. Even though that would be ticky tack. That's far from "ticky-tack". You gotta INBOUND the ball after a basket, which means you have to be OUT of bounds. If he wasn't out, then I guess it's karmic retribution for Seton Hall's Sixth Man and the lame foul call against Courtland Freeman at the end of the game in Pittsburgh in '03 all at the same time.

Depends on the severity. If he never went out of bounds, you're right. If it was merely a case of his foot not quite being off the ground or something...

Look...How many times has a foul been committed and there was no call? Fouls are called when they are seen (we all hope). I wasn't able to see the game (only listen), so I don't know what happened. If he did step on/over/not even go out of bounds before the through, that sucks for VU, but it happens to all teams.
I, for one, am sick of how they only show at the MCI center the highlight plays. I would love to see questionable calls made by the refs shown on the big in-house screens after they are made. Sure, this would open a Pandora’s box, however it would help to keep the refs honest.
I hate it when the refs decide the game at the last second, yet it happens. God knows we have had our share of calls to pull a game out from under our feet.
Either they didn't see something that happened, or it didn't happen. Bottom line: No penalty was called.
