The thing that stuck out for me today was how bad the refs were. Pretty much all their calls killed the Seahawks.
--the offensive pass interference call that took away the TD.
--Not overturning Big Ben's touchdown.
--the holding call that turned 1st and goal on the 3 into "Hasselbeck has to make a play" territory, which as we all know, turned out so well.
And finally, what was with the "going low" penalty on Hasselbeck when he was trying to tackle the guy who picked him off? Has that penalty ever been called before?
You'd think the Refs would have done a better job in the Super Bowl.

The officiating in the Playoffs was AWFUL and it continued tonight with "bird legs" Bill Leavy and his crew doing one crappy job. I'd add that this game summed up a mediocre year in the NFL with a decent team winning, but the worst regular season MVP and Postseason MVP's I've seen--Randle El should've won it, but I wouldn't disagree if no MVP was awarded just as it was when Pittsburgh was there last--Larry Brown. Boring game, but happy for Steelers fans and congrats.

Worst Super Bowl since, what, the ten straight years of blowouts? This might've been worse than that. Sloppy play by both teams and the officials.
I have to disagree on one call. The tip of the ball got over the plane, IMO, on Roethlisberger's TD. While he was in the air, before he got hit.

Worst. Superbowl. Ever.
Say what you will about my Pats...but at least we created some goddamn drama.

I rooted for sportsmanship and rampant commercialism - there was a lot to cheer for either way.

Disclaimer: I hate the Pirates, the Steelers and Iron City Beer.[/b]
That said, the reason I think Big Ben scored on that little scamper is simple. When he came down to the ground the ball was only a couple inches from the plane of the goal line. He was knocked back to get to that point. The ref could have made the call either way, and there was no way any ref in the world could overturn that call based on replay evidence.
- I can't believe that was a pass interference call on the first Seattle TD... horrendous
- NFL security should look into Jeramay Stevens' bank accounts and see if he's getting any large payouts in the coming weeks/months... four drops? That TD he caught was just to distract us from the fact he couldn't (wouldn't?) catch a cold
- The holding call... well, I've seen worse let go and less called... you can call holding on just about every play during an NFL season, so I'm not so sure that was a bad call
- But that call on Hasselback was... uh... what was that again? Chop block? 'Cause he dove for the knees of the ball carrier but happened to graze the blocker? So confusing...
All that said, Seattle has nobody to blame but themselves. Dropped passes, dumb penalties, bad sacks, missed FG's... they could easily have one that despite the shoddy reffing but couldn't close the deal when it counted. My cousin and I counted three times Seattle was in the red zone, only to have a penalty and a sack on successive plays push them to the limits of FG range.
And can we talk about Seattle's clock management? At the end of both the half and regulation?! Horrendous. Someone should be fired for that... now.
They may have been the better team last night, and got jobbed on the TD call and the Hasselback call, but they didn't do enough to win. The penalties that took them out of the red zone or nullified other big plays were legit calls, and combine that with their other game-management mistakes and you've got a recipie for a loss. The officiating was the worst I've seen in a long time, but Seattle still could have won that game.

I agree with most of what Buffalo has written, but I guess I'm in the minority on the offensive pass interference call. There wasn't much contact there, but the receiver clearly created separation between himself and the dback, and that led directly to the touchdown. How can you not call that?

The dback slipped and feel because his ankles were broken by the juke step...However Djack did extend his arm beyond 90 degrees and make inadvertent contact.

He definitely pushed off, but I don't the think arm had a material effect on the play. The defensive back was already completely off balance from the move and Jackson caught it with so much room to spare that it would have been best as a non-call. The second holding call was non-existant, though, and the chop block call amazingly bad.
