I'm sure this guy also thinks A-Rod is the best Baseball player in the World and that Peyton Manning is the best QB in the world---I will stick with the guys I like and watch them win championshps and he can have his "Stat Champs".
There is something to be said about actually watching people play in big games and the failure of some and the excellence of others. I know most hate that type of talk as they think everything is relative, but it's obvious that some of these guys just dont' perform as their hype would suggest they should/would if given the chance.

While I'm a big fan of statistical analysis, especially in baseball, RDF, I do agree with you at times. (I do think A-Rod is a great player and he isn't exactly why the Yanks are "losing") but I get a bit annoyed with stats folks outside of baseball. Basketball and Football are true team sports -- baseball isn't. As such, you have solve problems of the quality of player around them, the effect on the player and the effect of opportunity. Stat guys tend to be arrogant -- even Hollinger -- and make proclamations that a true statistician would give about five thousand assumptions as caveats.
Garnett has nice stats. I think he's better than you do. And last year his whole team gave up on him. But I don't think he's the NBA's best player.
