Never... EVER... speak of that again.
Incidentally, the first market to complain enough about that damn thing to make Fox take it off the air for local games was good ol' B-Lo. What else are you going to do in mid-February sitting around with a large order of hot wings from Duff's (best wings in Buffalo - and by definition the world) and a case of Blue at your feet?

Those are some good wings, my friend. I'd like to stand up for the wings in Rochester as being of the finest quality, but you've got that one won, hands down (I do, however, make my family periodically send me bottles of Country Sweet wing sauce, so I can put it on just about anything).
OLN is in about 7 of 10 households, so this is a great fit. About 62M viewers, I believe. Not as accessible as ESPN, granted, but as Buffalo has mentioned, how many times has the worldwide leader spurned hockey for other programming? Too many to mention. This will be flagship programming for OLN from jump. Nothing but good news. I wonder if they'll be able to lure Barry, Thorne, Clement, Panger, Levy, Buccigross, Engblom or Morganti. Hope so. I may have problems with Clement from time to time, but for the most part, I like the ESPN hockey guys.
And if there can be an NHL Network that's anything close to the quality of NFL Network, that'd be fantastic. It took me a while to remember where NFL Network was on my dial and get used to watching it, but I get more football news from there now than I get from anywhere else, especially ESPN.

I hear that they are going for the announcers from Battle Bots. Hey, ESPN did it, why not? Better yet, in order to better pronounce the names of Eastern European and Scandanavian players, they can just co-opt TDF veterans Paul Sherwen and Phil Liggett. Seriously, though, what else does ESPN have to offer someone like Darren Pang? Gary Thorne can still do baseball and Bill Clement, of course, has the Great Outdoors Games to make his career on, but I'd imagine a lot of the ESPN hockey guys might need some work. What about that little kid from Mighty Ducks 3? Or, the greatest play-by-play man of all time, Jim Carr... "This young man has had a very trying rookie season, with the litigation, the notoriety, his subsequent deportation to Canada and that country's refusal to accept him, I guess that's more than most 21-year-olds can handle."

HAHAHA!! Number six, Olie Ogelthorpe!!
"And next folks, is Andre "Poodle" Losier, defense. Andre, as you may already know, has been living in semi-seclusion in Northern Quebec since the unfortunate Denny Pratt tragedy."

One of the two 'dors D-men that came off the bench for the Flames to fill in during the Cup run (subsequently sent on to the ... 'Canes?... during the draft), Mike Commodore, was nicknamed Oggie. The crowd went wild for the 'fro he was wearing.
Buff -- you get a good one in Toni Lydman. A little premature to say he can handle power play duty, but a solid top-6 defenceman. With the right partner, maybe even top-4.
BTW -- SI CANNOT cover hockey -- it's just not American enough. Today's story on the most improved programs highlighted some v.g. moves (Pitt/Phi/Chi/Bos), but gave short shrift to the two Canuck entries (Cgy/Edm), obviously as the editors aren't aiming at the Canadian Edition. Hands down my Flames have had the most successful -- by far -- post-lockout situation. They just added to that by essentially trading Toni Lydman for Roman Hamrlik and a 3rd round draft choice! Back to the local websites...
Cheers, Frosback

Missed this news yesterday. Looks like Mike Emrick is the man for OLN hockey games. Very good play-by-play man to get, I just hope they don't partner him with Jon Davidson, I can't stand that guy.
Most of the ESPN staff has been snatched up, but there's plenty of talent out there for color commentary, hope they don't go with him just because he is the biggest name available.
Oct. 5 can't get here soon enough. I know football will fix this craving, but (my apologies to baseball or tennis fans) there is flat out NOTHING going on in sports right now.
I just said "flat out".
I have to go punch myself repeatedly for using a Dickie V-ism.

The new hockey games are coming out! The new hockey games are coming out!
Time to go pick one up on Sept. 8.
EA Sports is making a good move by making NHL06 available at less than the $50 price tag. I think ESPN had caught up to them (and maybe even passed them) in recent years, but with the new features EA is adding this year, the Skill Stick, more realistic puck physics and a cool momentum feature for skaters, I think I might go back to EA.
Besides, ESPN abandoned hockey, so I might as well abandon them.
God, I am such a loser.

So I was back home this past weekend for the Bills opener vs. Houston. Decided to stick around a few days and head over to the Pepsi Center in Amherst for the Sabres first practice (which was briefly open to the public).
To quote Brian Fantana, I left the building thinking "I'm VERY aroused." There's something oddly satisfying hearing pucks rattle off the boards, the sound of blades carving up the ice and Marty Biron (who better be traded SOON) yelling at people in this part French, part English dialect that apparently the rest of the team understands. As I write this we are 20 days, 9 hours and 50 minutes to the drop of the puck on the new era in the NHL.
Game on.

Amen, Buffalo.
Although, I am a little disheartened at the words of Bs GM O'Connell after signing backup Tim Thomas "...if Raycroft doesn't sign, we're comfortable with Toivonen and Thomas..."
YIKES!
When you get rid of Biron, Andrew Raycroft may very well be available for the young Sabres. I am NOT happy about this.
But IRREGARDLESS, bring it on. It's going to be a fun season.

Don't need 'im... hopefully the NCAA career shutouts leader and last year's AHL goalie-of-the-year Ryan Miller will be ready to roll, with my man Mika backing him up.

And another thing... what's going to happen with Boynton? Now THERE'S a guy I'd like in B-Lo. Trade Biron and one of our many forwards for Boynton... that's what i say

I am a little disheartened at the words of Bs GM O'Connell after signing backup Tim Thomas "...if Raycroft doesn't sign, we're comfortable with Toivonen and Thomas..." YIKES! Then again, I am only 30 games into my first season on NHL06, and Patrice Bergeron's agent has already broken off all contract negotiations with me and refuses to take my calls. Maybe being a GM isn't as easy as it looks. I can't be sure, but I could have sworn the last time I tried to make contact, a window on my TV screen popped up with the words: "Trade me right F***ing NOW! "

Got Raycroft, but still no Boynton! Rumor mill has them trading Gill to free up cap space. Whatcha think, Boz?
As for my Sabres, I'm starting to get nervous. Yes, Vanek has been lighting it up. Yes, it looks like Max might finally start playing consistently well in the NHL with the (so far) open flow of the game. And sure Tiny Tim Conolly looks like he's back to form (BEST. HANDS. IN. THE. NHL.).
But both Ryan Miller and Marty Biron have played well so far. I'm terrified Darcy is going to f--- up and keep them both (two starters) and jettison Mika Noronen (a solid backup) and thus create a goaltending controversy. Maybe Biron will play so well someone like Philly will trade for him.
As I write this we are 15 days, 8 hours and 32 min away from the new season...

Hmm, well after last night's stellar performance in Toronto, the B's better get Boynton in camp! And maybe a few other defensemen to boot! Yeah, O'Connell, Toivonen's ready for the NHL. Sure he is. Be glad Raycroft signed. Be very glad. On another note....Jizzy Crizzy, THIRTEEN penalties against the B's? ? ? ? I know it's only pre-season, but maybe this time they DO mean it when they talk about cracking down on obstruction. Of those 13, all but three were for hooking, holding or interference. I guess we'll see whn the regular season starts (in 14 days, 6 hours & 28 minutes, to follow your example, Buffalo).

That woman has big boobs and is barely dressed? ? ?
Huh.
I didn't even notice.
I like the NHL's defense though. She's his "spiritual advisor and mentor." That's pretty good. I wonder if they actually even tried to keep a straight face with that one.
But, I suppose Martha Burk needs something to keep her busy until Michelle Wie can qualify for the Masters.
