ESPN just about turned the Big 4 networks into the Big 5. What a coup. They must have paid a massive premium for the NFL to give it to a cable channel.

Not really. Disney owns ABC, which owns ESPN. ESPN didn't really have to do any work. This was probably just ABC deciding they didn't want to sacrifice 4 hours every week to a game that most of the country wouldn't care about (because we all know that half of MNF's games are stinkers).

Even more importantly, NBC gets back in the football mix with the Sunday night games (and presumably the Saturday night games late in the season that ESPN was broadcasting). So we're supposed to use Fox and CBS during the day on Sunday, NBC on Sunday night, and ESPN on Monday Night? Yeesh... that's a lot of channel surfing. So be it. Hopefully this means the last of the Paul McGwire-Joe Theisman-Mike Patrick combo (although Patrick ain't so bad). Dust off Bob Costas, the ORIGINAL Jim Nantz "Mr. Do-It-All." I'm personally convinced that Costas signed some kind of lifetime deal when NBC had MLB, NFL and NBA and was the dominant sports network - what's why he's relegated to HBO at this point. I couldn't stand him at the time, but dopes like Nantz make me long for the Costas days.

I agree with dumping the ESPN Sunday night crew, far and away the worst of the 4 networks currently doing football. I hope Al Michaels sticks around for MNF even with ABC, although I have heard he is unhappy with the change. Madden I could do without, but he is not much worse than guys like Esiason, Aikman, Collinsworth.
As for Costas- I loved him when I was younger and he waxed romantic about baseball leaving NBC, but now that we only see him for the Olympics he seems a little too schmaltzy, Jim Nantz in "what a moment" mode round the clock. Perhaps if he starts calling football games he will regain a little testosterone, but he is not at the top of my list for play by play guys at this point.
