People need to keep themselves out of the field of play. That guy was obviously swiping his arm in there to distract Sheff and he ended up hitting his head or hat a little. Really stupid and it could have caused another nasty Detroit Brawl type situation. Luckily Sheff had the self control to not throw the punch at that guy that it appeared he was about to unload.
By the way, how scared did that guy look when Sheffield came at him, haha.

The thread should be titled "Stupid Yanks-Sox". Can we PLEASE see two different teams on television? Blah blah blah they're the two best teams and blah blah blah everyone wants to see the game in case it's a classic and blah blah blah ESPN knows people will tune in so of course they should show it and blah blah blah I don't give a flying crap. I missed the incident, but I gather that the fan was at fault. Guess he's lucky Sheff is off the juice...although the first televised case of baseball 'roid rage woulda been fun to talk about.

Sheff got hit unexpectedly in the face, cleared his personal bubble, then started yelling at the fan. He could have easily gone Artest and didn't. Though Sox security showing up quickly helped a lot too.

I wish Sheff had throttled that fan. The less Boston fans, the better. They are the most disgusting people alive. The Red Sox are one of the few teams I actively HATE and it solely based around their fans. "Lovable losers"? how about "annoying whiners" And now that they've won everything has gotten 20 times worse. Red Sox fans are like pathetic Twerps fans--both hate the evil empre (Yankees/Duke) and have made their games into a fictional, one-sided rivalry that is based entirely on the underdog upstarts actually winning for once.

While the fan was out of line, Sheff DID take a swing, but missed and that was before he even threw the ball in. Pathetic response from Sheff considering the fan didn't even hit him nor is it conclusive that he tried...grazed his hat according to the replay.

Well you certainly made some friends today...let's see, you have denigrated an entire region because we care about baseball. Have you ever been to a game? Have you ever even been to Boston? Bold yaps for such a young pup.

Heat of the moment i can't blame Sheff. Dude threw a weak uppercut, but Sheff didn't see that. All he felt was some guy touching his face. Obviously it was weak from the word go, but for all Sheff knows in that situation, the guy threw something hard and completely misfired. Given the nastiness that usually spews from both fanbases towards the opposing team, I can't blame him for assuming the worst and reacting how he did. But throw the ball in to the infield first, gary, jesus! Bottom line, don't touch the players. Don't touch a ball in play. If you do, be prepared for whatever repercussions come from it. Pretty good game otherwise, though Keith Foulke has got to give you Sox fans heart palpatations with the way he skates in to and out of jams. While the fan was out of line, Sheff DID take a swing, but missed and that was before he even threw the ball in. Talk about clutter, Cambridge...you made like four consecutive posts! And honestly, your overwhelming bias is apparent in every statement you made. Spoken like a true fan.

And just his smug expression was worth a punch or two to the noggin let alone the fact he crossed the line. Best part, according to my intern who was at the game...people in the grandstands above the section in question started chucking beer over the railing as soon as the incident occured...hoping to hit Sheff. Of course, being waaaaay too far from the field they soaked the fat cats in the section below them. Apparently, some confused drunkards in the section were completely confused by the beer shower and began numerous fist fights. By my interns estimate about 20% of that entire section was asked to leave or fled the scene when all was said and done. Fascinating. Absolutely fascinating. The things you miss when you watch the game on TV and give your tickets to the interns...

I dont know, I think you saw a different guy, cause after Sheff came at him he had the "oh crap, Im gonna get my head busted in" look. Aside from this situation though, why do baseball fans reach down to try and grab balls when they are in the field of play, it is pure stupidity. When a ball is in play you leave it alone! Do fans in courtside seats at basketball games reach into the airspace of the court and intercept passes along the sidelines? NO!

When a basketball goes into the stands, you don't get to keep it. When you snag a baseball, it's yours (unless you interfered with play).
That's probably the difference right there.
