ESPN shows his last game as Jan 2 where he played only 15 minutes...is he injured or just benched for being ineffective?

It wasn't the flu, it was another kind of infection, from what I remember reading. He could well be on a long course of antibiotics if that's the case, and playing wouldn't be doing him any good.

Didn't Tony have mononucleosis last year or the year before? Maybe this is a recurrence of the same. Or was it someone else?

It was revealed in the Duke v. NC State game tonight that Tony Bethel was diagnosed with Colitis- a chronic inflamation in the large intestine. This has caused him to lose a bunch of weight. I'm very sensitive to this, since I have suffered from a similar ailment. He'll be fine, but it really sucks for the first few months. I wouldn't be surprised if he either sits out or doesn't play well for the rest of the year. I wish him success though and hope that he can recover this year.

A Padres former first round draft pick had a serious case of colitis, or rather still does. Jake Gautreau was considered to be on the fast track to the majors but he lost much of his power until last year. It can be very serious, and in Jake's case, he can only learn to manage it.

There are several different causes for colitis, which is a somewhat generic term. Some of them more easily treated than others. Hope he improves as rapidly as possible.

Of course we all hope that Bethel gets better, but I don't feel the least bit sorry for him. What goes around...
At least he'll have that quality NCSU "degree" to fall back on (or use as a napkin, coaster, tissue, etc). That is, if he graduates (a fair shot when you attend a school/ farming academy where the coach only cares if you are eligible and not if you're on track to graduate).
But at least the girls/ cows are super hot. Wait...
All much better than being a four-year starting senior and soon to be alum at Georgetown. Obviously so.

What? ? Are you insinuating that because he transferred he deserves to get sick with colitis? That's just plain ridiculous. I don't know if its supposed to be a joke or not, but either way, I find your comments pretty offensive and idiotic.

gotta throw a couple cents into this fray: Dammit I loved Tony Bethel. I remember he'd run around the court at full speed. He actually had legit three point range, and didn't tend to disappear around crunch time, he also didn't make dumb decisions. I was really quite crushed when he transferred. I remember after a big game in his freshman year, JT2 said "Tony Bethel will be a special player for Georgetown". That comment made me so happy, because I could see it happening, but then he transferred.. oh well. i would say my fav. player at this point is ashanti cook when he is playing well... i also really like wallace A LOT..

Please note that I prefaced my post with the statement that it is a given that everyone should wish that Bethel gets better. I'm not wishing poor health on the guy.
What I am saying, in no uncertain terms, is that I think that Bethel did a pretty crappy thing by running away from the program he committed to and which had committed to him. Therefore, I have little sympathy when things don't go well for him. While I do wish him such basics as health, and I don't hold any malice toward him, I can't say I'll be rooting for him to succeed-- in basketball or life.

Yeah, but saying "what goes around comes around" is a little much. Believe me, someone that's suffered from this ailment (Crohn's actually, but it's the same family of disease), that it's not something to joke about or say that someone "deserves". I understand you might not have meant it that way, but I was offended nonetheless.
