The Hoyas Sailing Team continued an extremely successful fall season this past weekend, with stellar results coming from both the coed and women's teams.
At the ICSA Singlehanded National Championships in Seattle, Freshman Charlie Buckingham continued Georgetown's recent tradition of excellence in this event, placing 6th out of 18 sailors. While this was obviously a great result, things could have been even better, as Buckingham's scoreline was clouded by 2 bad races in the series. He finished the event with a 1-2-1-3, showing that he will challenge for the national championship in years to come. This is the same event won by US Laser Olympic representative Andrew Campbell (SFS '06) three times while at Georgetown.
Adding to the good news, the Georgetown Women's team won the MAISA Fall Championship, which is the sailing conference championship for the season. In the process, the 4th ranked Lady Hoyas knocked off top ranked St. Mary's, getting hot at the right time going into the Atlantic Coast Championships next weekend at Eckerd in Florida. Senior Skipper/Crew combination Blaire Herron and Leigh Fogwell were especially fast, running away with the A-Division by 16pts.
This all adds on to good news from last weekend, when the Coed team took home 2nd at the War Memorial Regatta, the conference championship for the fall season for the coed team.
