I think that III is playing freshmen this year because he's playing the players who have adapted the most to the Offense.
That being said, I don't think that is an ideal situation, or one that any sane coach would want ideally. I think it is in Coach III's best interest to develop Crawford and Reed- which he clearly is doing - and to increase the level of depth on the bench.
Look at Illinois, they have four year players, many of whom did not see the court the first or even second year, but they learned the system. And now, they have a starting five that features FOUR seniors. That is the goal. Experience, poise, strength, talent and skill are the ideal combination for college basketball -- because all too often you are playing against very young kids.
That being said, I think that the incoming Freshman are going to be good, however, I don't expect them to be superstars. They will get burn, but probably many of you who are touting their arrival now...will be tearing them apart a la the younger cats now and drooling about JTIII's next class -- which will most likely include a stud PG from the loaded 2006 class.
Just saying, I don't want to hear this same "...wait till the freshmen get here...Augustine is a real stud..." next year argument this time next year...
I think the players we have now are more talented than they are given credit for and will improve dramatically as they receive coaching from JTIII and staff. As far as he is concerned, all players on the team are "freshmen" this year, due to the change in offense, however, next year...all current players will be "sophmores" and will therefor have that much more experience.
I think it's clear that Reed and Crawford are getting some time on the court, in fact there is more substitution there than at the 3, 4 or 5. If DJ goes, the only frosh who I would imagine getting significant time -- considering he's also our "highest ranked recruit" (whatever that amounts to) and our lack of depth when it comes to size-- is Dr. Octagon.

crawford didn't see his first real be action until the rutgers game, but he acquitted himself nicely on defense. he appeared a little lost on offense (likely the reason we have not seen more of him), but don't be surprised to see him getting some more minutes in the next few games. With RaMell missing the game on Saturday b/c of the funeral of his mother, i would not be surprised to see crawford come off the bench early in the 1st half

Freshmen I think it is very interesting that a number of posters are writing about the incoming freshmen and that they won't get time because the system is so hard to learn. The bench players who don't even get into games this year will be far ahead of them. But we all know that JT is starting 3 freshmen right now. If DJ is the only bench player getting minutes -- when additional bodies are so desperately needed -- why would anyone assume these non-playing bench players will have a big advantage over much more highly rated recruits, who were brought in by JT3 himself? I am not suggesting they will come in and take starting roles. But it seems highly likely that at least two, and maybe all four of our freshmen will be significant contributors next season. Could any of them win a starting spot sometime during the year next season? Why not. As mentioned, there are 3 freshmen starting now. Finally, it has to be easier for the new guys to get with JT's program next season because the rest of the team will already know what to do. Teaching a few guys to contribute is a lot easier than teaching the entire team from scratch. And the new kids can learn from the older kids next year, something that isn't possible this year. I just think it is tough to justify the belief that bench players who don't get minutes now are going to be so improved that they'll get a lot of minutes next year. Especially when they will be competing with higher rated kids coming in. All that said, the team should be an open competition next year. If Tyler or Cornelio or anyone can beat out some other guys -- good for them, give them more minutes. And finally, who starts is not as important as who finishes. Someone who might not be a starter could still be playing a crucial role at crunch time. The point is that 3 freshmen wouldn't be starting this year if we weren't completely void of talent down low (Hibbert) and at the point position (Wallace) coming into the season. The biggest reason we haven't seen more of Crawford this season is because he plays behind a combination of Cook, Owens, Ross and Bowman at the 2/3 spot. I just don't want everyone to get all excited about where these kids rank and think that means they are going to show up as better COLLEGE players than what we have. There is a big difference between being ranked 50th and being ranked 5th. I think the guards will definitely log some minutes next year, but I don't see any of them starting over Cook (SENIOR) or Wallace unless we have some sort of injury or go to a 3-guard lineup. Now I'd bet that we have a better chance of seeing Egerson or Spann in the starting lineup next year than we do Sapp just based on what we are losing this year in Owens and Ross.

I agree that Hibbs wouldn't have started if say, Townes was here, but I'm kinda glad we had an opening at the guard position.
I have a hard time getting past the whole walk-on thing, but thanks to this thread, I've taken a closer look at Wallace's stats and I'm just flat out impressed.
Very few turnovers. Great shooting %. Opponent PGs don't seem to be tearing him apart as badly as we think (may just be Jeff and Roy in the middle). Very calm under pressure in both games I saw. Incredible range.
You're right though about the frosh next year. I don't really expect to see more than one frosh starter, if that.

and if there is a frosh starter it's definitely not at the 1 or 2...barring injury.

What's the consensus on the likelihood of Wallace getting that last schollie next year? Barker Davis seemed to think it was a foregone conclusion, leaving us with no real chance to bring in any additional big people next season.

I agree about Wallace, but the rest of your post assumes no one leaves other than Ross and Owens. Given the Hoyas' track record that seems highly unlikely, especially factoring in our new coach (they weren't his recruits) and the extremely limited playing time for half the team.

I know that Princeston is a different beast, but back in 1999 (the year before JTIII became coach there), Geogetown played and lost at an opening round NIT game in the good old Garden State. Princeston didn't use any subs for that game. Those goofy white kids played all 40 minutes. In face the student section had a cheer everytime Esh would sub a guy out. "Sit down, Shut Up!" So maybe part of the Princeston system is lack of subs and more goofy white kids.
