This week the big meet of the season, before the actually nationals and regional qualifiers, will be held in Terre Haute. The Hoyas have entered the following runners (not sure who is actually running in the meet - I seem to remember that they had an open race for those not running on the team as one of the first seven):
1. Banks, Michael 517 M 2. Bean, Alex 518 M 3. Bonsey, Brandon 519 M 4. Boyle, Owen 520 M 5. Bumbalough, Andrew 521 M 6. Dalpiaz, Brian 522 M 7. DeBole, Matt 523 M 8. Krisch, Michael 524 M 9. Laboy, Andre 525 M 10. Nunn, Dan 526 M 11. Roberts, Sandy 527 M 12. Scheid, Justin 528 M As you can see, Levi Miller is not listed (probably an injury - hope nothing serious), and Dan Nunn is listed (it would be his first race of the year).

Too bad about Levi, he seems like he improving the most of anyone on the team and is stepping into an elite category off his performance at Jr. natls in the 1500 and his 24 flat 8k last week. He's probably the #3 guy right now behind debole + bumbalough. Will be interesting to see who can step up as a consistent 4-5 guys.

I also noticed that Natasha Labeaud is not on the women's list--I wonder if she is injured again. If she is out the women's chances will be hurt as their depth for XC is very thin, maybe 3-4 elites including natasha. The men are much deeper.

That is too bad about Natasha; I hope she is not badly injured. She was in one race this year, but she had to miss the junior race in China, so it might be a chronic injury. I have felt that for the women to perform well this year, they all have to be healthy.
I hope Dan Nunn can pick up the slack left by Levi. If he can, and if Levi can come back to the real nationals, I think we can perform well. It will be interesting to see if Dalpiaz can do well in this meet. Last couple of years he had done well in early meets, but not so well in the bigger meets. I think they are underracing him this year, so maybe that will play into his hand and he will do well in the important meets. It will be interesting to see if Owen Boyle can continue his improvement. Reformation, I think you were right about redshirting Gerber.

I think if all goes well, we can be in the top five tomorrow in the men's blue race. Not sure about the women.

guhoyas.com talks about the race, but they also mention Levi, who was not listed on the entries (they don't give an indication of why he won't be there).
The women might get a top 10 finish, if they do well. Unfortunately, Natasha will not be running, so it hurts their chances.

Women finish 8th in the White race. Liz Maloy 10th and Melissa Grelli 18th. Nice result.

Thanks for the results - you were fast; I was just looking at the site. Good news, bad news on the results, but mostly good news for the future (i.e., real NCAA XC meet). The men ran only five guys ( ). They were allowed seven, so why only five. The fact that we were 5th, when we were ranked 14-15th in the country is good; the pre-Nats has two races, so you double your score and add a couple (the two top team, Wisco and Ark, were not in the meet) and you figure out your placing in the country. So the men were right about right, although they were 3rd in this meet the last two years. Individual performances: 12. Bumbi, 23:58.2 - good finish for the redshirt freshmen (in XC at least). 48. Matt Debole, 24:27.4 - fairly good time, but he should have been higher placed. 53. Justin Scheid, 24:29.8, good race for Justin - he is coming into his own, and only two seconds behind Debole. 68. Michael Banks, 24:39, another good performance - he came in as mainly a miler, so good XC result. 93. Brian Dalpiaz, 24:50.4 - hopefully he will improve in his future meets. Where were the other guys? Krisch, Laboy, Nunn, et al. We knew Levi Miller was out, but what happened to half the team?

I was expecting a top 10 finish by the women, so this was a more impressive showing than by the men, considering their ranking - 23. Most of the top teams were here and divided among two races, so a good showing would have been 10th place, so the women did two places better. And without Natasha and the Ogrodnicks and Maggie did not run that well today. So better times seem to be ahead. 10. Elizabeth Maloy, 20:28.5 - best showing by a Hoya today! 18. Melissa Grelli, 20:38.6 - great race by Melissa, who is showing her potential this year. 59. Maggie Infeld, 21:20.0 - Maggie can do better; she has been having a down season, so far, so she might have been hurt/sick. But she should improve over the season. 100. Joanna Rodgers, 21:44 107. Jennie Funk, 21:46.7 - I was expecting a little more of Jennie, based on her early season results. 170. Kailin Collins, 22:23.6 188. Hilary Bontz, 22:33.5 - still spending too much time studying as a grad student.

Today the men beat two teams ranked ahead of them, Arizona and Oklahoma State, but two teams ranked behind them, Florida State (27th) and UCSB (unranked) beat the Hoyas. So they will probably stay the same position in this week's poll. BTW, Duke finished 26th in the race today.

The women beat two teams, UW and Ok State, that were ranked ahead of them. All the seven teams ahead of the Hoyas today were ranked ahead of them. So, expect the women to move up in the polls this week.

In the other men's race today Florida (yes, that team again) finished 3rd and Notre Dame finished 4th, a higher placing than the Hoyas, so they will probably jump ahead of us in the polls, but Michigan and BYU finished 7th and 9th, two teams that were ahead of us, so it is a wash, and we will probably be at 15 again this week. The big winners were the two teams from the sunshine state, FL and FSU, as they were both ranked in the 20's before the race and finished in the top five today.
Edit: BYU didn't have their best runner today, so they were probably giving away 80 points, which would have placed them 3rd today, so we might not vault ahead of them.

Four more women rank in the open race: 13. Renee Tomlin, 21:50.1 35. Lauren Gregory, 22:18.1, both Renee and Lauren, both frosh, would have placed 6th and 7th on the team today had they run in the main race. 80. Nana Hanson-Hall, 22:41.5 144. Amanda Walsh, 23:21.4

Hoya results from the open men's race:
15. Brandon Bonsey 24:58.7 42. Rasheed Thompson 25:20.1 178. Owen Boyle 26:55.6 214. Alex Bean 28:03.5
Very good race for Brandon, not so good for Owen, considering what he has done earlier in the year (had beaten Bonsey by 8 s in the William and Mary meet, but is slower than Brandon today by almost two minutes). Which leaves us still wondering what happened to Sandy Roberts, Dan Nunn, Andre Laboy, and Mike Krisch.

Maybe Krisch, Roberts, and Nunn are redshirting--stacking the team for solid top 10--maybe top 5 finishes in the next couple of years.
Results were pretty mixed for men and women__ i think the men would have been much higher had Levi Miller ran, he might be the #2 on the team now next to Bumby. Scheid and Banks did unexpectedly well. The other freshman Bean and Boyle did surprisingly poorly.
Liz Maloy is running as a true elite coming off her NCAA 1500m final appearance with tall american type XC running, while Maggie Infeld seems to be going backward since a stellar freshman yr. Melissa Grelli is becoming a solid performer while the O'grodnicks and Natasha Labeaud are awol again. On a bright note for the women Renee Tomlin, an elite 800/1500 type ran pretty well in the open race--I suspect she could improve a lot if the coaches care about improving her as a distance runner-they may just be using xc as endurance training for her mid distance stuff. The women will have to make a big push in recruiting distance types this year or they will cease to become a top distance program.

Maybe they are redshirting, especially Dan Nunn, but all of their names were entered at the meet. And why would the Hoyas run just five men. I am thinking that the four came down with food poisoning. Why didn't two of the four who ran in the open race come over to the blue race? I think they had to give the lineups by at least Friday, and they decided to run those four in the open race, but they were not counting on the other runners getting sick. At least that is NevadaHoya theory #501.
Liz is running extremely well. I see Maggie coming back as she is a good competitor. Too bad about the Ogrodnicks and Natasha - it seems as if they are injury prone. Actually the midde distance freshman runners, Renee Tomlin and Lauren Gregory, did better than the upper classmen, Nana Hanson-Hall, also a mid distance runner. I agree if they work on it, they may improve significantly. Yes, have to recruit some distance types this year. They should try to get Nevada's best runner, Marie Lawrence, second in the Foot Locker meet the past three years.

It turns out that Dan Nunn and Sandy Roberts did run (saw pictures of them in the race), but did not finish. Injured???
