i'm not a head coach, but i play one on tv - . one problem with the "princeton" offense is that the center ends up hanging around the foul line area making the initial pass and setting screens. that's a tough spot for any center to make an offensive impact. can't the hoyas vary the offense a bit and maybe run a high-low (green to hibbert) or some baseline screening to get roy better post position? i think that to not incoporate roy in the offense is the waste of a 7 footer.

And I thought your suggestion was going to be to play 'Heart of a Hoya' during the game...
Seriously, he definitely got the ball down low during UConn, and was just outmuscled. That said, hi-lo would be nice.
One thing I'd like to see is him take the ball out there facing the basket. I cannot see how he'll pass out of it with his back to the basket at the 3 pt line.

I've only seen 2 games on TV (Illinois and UConn), but in the Illinois game Roy put the ball on the floor several times at the free throw line without getting his pocket picked. My heart was in my throat each time, but a couple of times he dribbled to the hole pretty well and that was against an athletic, strong defensive team with a decent center. He may get an opportunity to do that again. It's good to show it because if he can put the thought in a defense's collective head, it might make the perimeter defenders and particularly the baseline defenders less inclined to stretch the defense out. That could give our shooters a little more space.
Of course, Roy's handle might not be that good on a regular basis and he was just lucky in the Illinois game. Still, the point to get him more involved is a good one. This offense works best when defenses have to respect all of the offensive players.

Someone needs to light a fire under his arse and he'll get going then! I'd like to see him never bring the ball below his head when he gets a rebound and puts them back strong for the score. Doing this a few times in the beginning of the game will build confidence and really get him going.

I think you guys are really nit-picking here. Look, Roy is only a Freshman. Like, most first-year players it will take time for him to develop. Roy is going to be a great player. I think he has heart and enthusiasm. The skills and fundamentals will come along with time. If he didn't have the heart, and all he had were only the fundamentals, then I would be worried.

You can see the enthusiasm and fire in every game, especially watching him dive for balls, grab boards with authority (and some elbows), etc. The fundamentals and offensive prowess will come - the kid is only 18. Right now, he does serve as a defensive presence simply by changing shots, not to mention he has proven fairly effective down low in recent games. That block he had last night was downright filthy.

I know Roy is a total mess on offense right now, although he definitely has played well against other quality opponents (and fit in well as well).
But his defensive presence isn't easily quantified. He alters shots, blocks shots and basically takes away the middle from driving guards. He's not a great 1 on 1 defender, but he clogs the middle. And he rebounds well - not great, but well.
Defense is 50% of the game, and Roy definitely helps there. But if the offense is struggling that much, even his defense can't justify him playing over an aggressive DO.
Roy will improve over his four years. Right now, though, I think DJ is going to get the majority of minutes.

No doubt Roy heard all the "project" talk and wants to prove it wrong. I think he chose to wear #55 for a reason, as a measuring stick. I think his first two shots vs. UConn were a little strong, as he came out firing b/c he wanted to do well. So then he overadjusted and his next 3 shots (incl missed dunk) were too soft. So he's trying a little too hard. I'll take a roster full of those kids with JTIII as my coach. I think if he concentrates on defense a little more--staying at home, not leaving his feet when someone else is contesting a shot--he will be even more of a presence. His understanding of the flow of the offense and his shooting touch will come.

Honestly, I feel like this is the same discussion day after day. I'm sure that in practice and games - Roy is doing whatever it is that the coaching staff is asking/wanting him to do which I'm guessing is to play good defense and take what the other team gives him on the other end. I'm anxiously awaiting the day when we will all look back at each of these threads and everyone will say, I never doubted Roy. Will that be the next game, or next season - who knows, just give him time.....

Clarification: I am a fan of Roy. I think he brings a lot of defensive presence to the table and deserves his minutes. He is young and will get better and better. His enthusiasm is commendable. I just offered a suggestion on how Roy could get more offensive opportunities. You know, pointers from an armchair coach.
Go Roy. Go Hoyas.

I have been a defender of Roy on this board and still will be because I think he is a decent player and will only get better over time. That said, I dont think this team can wait for a big man. We need to recruit a true center/power forward type guy. Its a shame we lost out on goodridge because he is gonna be a beast and we almost had him in the bag. That said, I know the staff is recruiting like mad, but I hope they bring in a big guy with some skills to solidify the middle. Im just worried that we will never be top dog until we have a man in the middle that is a presence in the post. So who are we looking at and what are the chances? Any one know?

DaJuan Summers and Taj Gibson may be the two best bets in 2006. It is still extremely early.
The dream guy, who we have been listed with forever, was apparently at UConn (or was supposed to be) is the Big Ticket, Vernon Macklin.
He's a long shot, but if you want a game changer, Macklin is it.
