You are "kinda" right. The Big East minimum equates to a Conference maximum, as well. What this means is that for Conference purposes, all Men's Soccer teams need to be "fully-funded" within 2 years. Fully-funded does NOT mean every player is on scholarship; it means that a team is at the allowable NCAA maximum # of scholarships for that sport. Specific to Men's Soccer, that maximum is likely the $$ equating to 7-8 full scholarships. I think we all understand that in ANY sport, the $$ equating to the respective maximum can be divided across the entire roster. Simply put, Coach Wiese can allocate the total of those 7 or 8 scholarships as he & the Athletic Department choose, following, of course, all relevant NCAA guidelines. I do know that Coach Tabatznik was budgeted for less than 3 total full scholarships to spread across his roster.
So, YES, we are underfunded versus other Big East Schools. HOWEVER, we are ABSOLUTELY at the NCAA (& Big East, for that matter) maximum # of allowable scholarships in the following sports:
MBB (13) WBB (13) Volleyball MLAX (I believe it is in the neighborhood of 8-10) WLAX XC & Track & Field
The key fact of note in this entire debate is that when, for example, Notre Dame states that all of their teams are fully funded, they DO NOT mean that the nearly 300 student-athletes representing their school are all receiving 100% scholarship aid.
