No. 3 Georgetown Holds Off No. 4 Virginia, 8-4
Washington, D.C – Georgetown University's Schuyler Sutton (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) paced the third-ranked Hoyas with a career high four goals and GU raced out to a 6-1 lead through the game's first 16 minutes en route to an 8-4 victory over fourth ranked Virginia at the Multi-Sport Field. Georgetown improves to 10-2 on the season and 6-0 at home.
Virginia came into the game ranked 14th in the nation in scoring offense yet the Hoyas allowed just two goals to the Cavs in each half. Junior goalkeeper Maggie Koch (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School) made 12 saves for the Hoyas, who lead the country in scoring defense. GU defenders Chloe Asselin (Talloires, France/Edgemont) and Zan Morley (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School) caused two turnovers apiece and the Hoyas held a 24-19 advantage in ground balls. Georgetown has recorded more ground balls than their opponents in nine of their 12 games.
GU junior Coco Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) scored two more goals for a team leading 41 and has now tallied at least two markers in 28 of the last 30 games. Senior Lucy Poole (Lutherville, Md./Towson) also scored while junior Sara Zorzi (Timonium, Md./Roland Park Country School) handed out another assist for team-best 17.
Although Virginia posted nine draw controls to Georgetown's six, the Hoyas controlled the tempo for much of the game and cashed in on their scoring chances in the first half.
Poole opened the game's scoring with a free position goal at the 24:33 mark. Stanwick and freshman Courtney Hubschmann (Short Hills, N.J./Oak Knoll School) then scored unassisted goals over the next three minutes for a 3-0 GU bulge.
After UVa's Blair Weymouth assisted on a Tyler Leachman marker with 17:20 to go in the first half, Georgetown went on another three-goal spurt for a 6-1 edge. Zorzi fed Stanwick at 15:33 before Sutton tallied her first two goals over a two minute stretch.
Virginia closed to within 7-4 with just five minutes to go on Leachman's third goal of the game but it would not be enough.
Georgetown has now won consecutive games over the Cavaliers after Virginia won the first six meetings between the schools dating back to 1995. The Hoyas have allowed two goals or less in eight halves this season.
Georgetown plays three of their final four games on the road, starting with a meeting at BIG EAST foe Connecticut on Saturday, April 22 at 1:00 p.m.
I didn't realize it untill looking at the roster, but UVA's roster reads like the who's who of DC area lax. Hauser and Holden are the last 2 DC area All-Met players of the year, Bordley is the daughter of Rob Bordley, head coach of Landon, Leachman (who scored 3 goals) and her brother ain't exactly shabby talents either from Holton and Landon respectively. WE GOTTA GET SOME OF THESE KIDS!!! Charlottesville suuuuucks. But hey, our Baltimore girls sure are getting it done!! Go Coco!
