A full-priced Georgetown education is not cheap for anyone. If I found $1 million under a park bench tomorrow, and decided to use that money to send my cousin to GU, then after 4 years of tuition, transportation expenses, rent in Burleith/Georgetown, textbooks, living expenses, bar tabs at the Tombs, etc., around 20% of my money would be gone. Some parents of lax players may be better-equipped to handle those costs, but that doesn't mean the costs are not still high. If my cousin had a talent that would reduce my costs while providing him with the same quality education, I'd jump at the chance to save six figures. Yes, the wealthy are not wealthy because they don't know a good deal.

HOYA editorial on the matter: www.thehoya.com/viewpoint/042506/view1.cfmI think the writer is totally overreacting to the possibility of Georgetown accepting transfers from the Duke lacrosse team. While as a private institution Georgetown certainly has the right to deny admission based on the public relations problems it could cause, I think it is unfair to punish every one of the players based on the actions of two or three. Only two players have been charged with any crime, and from the information leaked to the public, it appears that the case is anything but a guaranteed conviction. The players who would be potentially leaving have not been charged with any crime, but still have had their reputations greatly damaged. To further punish them by refusing to accept them seems wrong. To me this is especially unfair because the writer if the editorial uses the recent success of the basketball team and recent increase in fan support of that team as an excuse to avoid any potential public relations problems accepting transfers from Duke would create. Anyone who reads this board regularly knows that the man who built our basketball program often took chances on kids with trouble in their backgrounds, offering them a chance others were unwilling to offer, and many consider this to be one of John Thompson's most admirable traits. For instance, Allen Iverson was arrested in high school, although the charges against him were later dropped. Many recruiters gave up on him, but Georgetown gave him a chance. Any Duke player who would be transferring to Georgetown would be one whose only guilt is association with alleged criminals. I would hope that a Catholic school would be willing to offer a second chance to these students, although I would also understand if the adminstration felt it unwise to admit them. I don't think it is right, however, to claim that the University is obligated to reject them based on the actions of their teammates.

Yeah, I can't say I agree with this editorial at all. Take this sentence:
"We should not allow any impression of criminality to blossom on the Hilltop as it has in Durham. Perception — even skewed — often follows those involved for years to come, especially in cases of sexual assault." That is terrible. This, to me, says: "to those who have been unfairly skewered in the national media, sorry. We don't care what kind of person you are, or what you could possibly contribute to our community. We only care about what other people might think." The HOYA is aghast that a GU lax player was arrested with Finnerty last November, because it was in the news. Yet GU students are arrested every weekend, for MIPs, PIs, and PUs, as well as more serious crimes (like assault). The message seems to be that criminal behavior is okay, unless the media picks it up. Then you're an embarrasment to the school.
I am also not a fan of making Coach Urick out to be a conniving, immoral, win-at-all-costs coach. He deserves better than that. How can the newpaper seriously claim it needs editorial autonomy/more agressive reporting when it so readily trashes its lax coach of 16 years?

There's about 42 different things wrong with this editorial. I can only comment on a few:
1. "Most appalling" college athletic story in recent years? I guess that whole murder thing down at Baylor wasn't such a big deal.
2. The SID's comment was "evasive, inadequate and inappropriate?" God forbid we should actually follow the NCAA rules and not comment on possible recruits. This has nothing to do with "transparency and openness."
3. No Duke lax players could transition to Georgetown because one of the kids arrested was also arrested in DC last year? How does that make any sense at all. In fact, I would think that any transferee would be on their best behavior at his new school.
4. "Until allegations are resolved and names are cleared" we should steer clear of these kids? Yeah, let's let them hang in the wind until they prove their innocence. Funny, I thought it was the other way around.
5. "Athletes who collectively sacrificed their right to play..." Can we give this a rest? There was no wall of silence. Players did cooperate? Simply because one of them didn't rush out to be on Larry King Live doesn't mean there was this code of silence. Maybe the allegations aren't true. How are the players supposed to rat each other out then?

As much as I hate to say it, "no comment" is probably the best move from Urick w/ regard to any story with "Duke" in the headline. Although many (myself included) think it's fine for GU to recruit both current Duke players and Duke commits, knee-jerk reactions such as the HOYA's editorial prove that there are some out there who will jump at the chance to drag Urick and GU through the mud.
The story does make another good point: a weakened Duke lax team wreaks havoc on many teams' strength of schedule, and this is particularly true for the other 3 ACC teams, as well as programs that schedule the Devils annually such as GU. I wonder if we will continue to schedule Duke in the future or replace them with another quality opponent. If we decide on the latter Hopkins and UVA would be good options, though I would really like to see the Duke program come through this ordeal so that the rivalry continues.
