Good, easy league win in some nasty weather. I was going to drive out, but I woke up this morning and it was hailing. I don't like lacrosse quite that much. The score looks closer than the game, since we outshot them by 25 and dominated the groundballs. Their goalie had 16 stops - why does every goalie have a career days against us? D'Andrea was in goal again, and he only stopped 2, but that was enough. Also, GUHoyas has an article on Mike White and Dave Pallisio, who came back this year as fifth years. Both have played very well, I might add. Anyway, the lede is a meditation on "Tommy Boy." Okay then. Good read. guhoyas.cstv.com/sports/m-lacros/spec-rel/040706aab.html

The goalies have career days because we average a crapload of shots every game. They give up 10 goals but still make 15 saves.

What exactly constitutes a shot in lacrosse? I'm used to hockey, where the puck must go into the goal or be stopped by the goaltender to be counted as a shot on the official scoresheet. Looking at lacrosse box scores, this is clearly not the case. For instance, against Fairfield GU had 48 shots for 10 goals and 16 saves for their goalie. What happened to the other 22 shots? Does any attempted shot count, even if it doesn't go on net?

Bingo. It's still a shot, even if it misses everything and goes ten feet over the net.

But they need to make this determination and call it a shot to decide posession of the ball due to the "closest to the ball when it goes out maintains posession" rule. If anything that misses the net and goes out is ruled a pass, you would lose posession despite having your attackman behind net for the purpose of backing up missed shots.
