With some inside information I can now tell you that The soccer team has found a new Coach. Brian Wiese Assistant Coach at Notre Dame will be taking over the Hoyas. He is very qualified He worked primarily with the goalkeepers and the defense at Notre Dame a program very strong in those areas. He was also an assistant at Stanford. He has produced numerous all Americans at both institutions. Coaching at Notre Dame has given him both an exposure to the hoyas but also experience at a quality program that is normally near the top of the Big east and constantly makes the NCAAs. Other coaches who were rumored to have interviewed included Head coaches from Penn, Vanderbilt, and VT. Expect an announcement either later today or relatively soon.

To make HSB happy, and since I do care a bit about soccer, I will say this looks a pretty good hire, although with no real HC experience it is tough to be sure with Wiese. The Clark pedigree is great, as is his own educational background (Dartmouth and Stanford engineering degrees). One has to think his familiarity with/to Muir was a big help to him in getting the job, because those are some pretty impressive candidates he was up against.
Rudy, the Penn coach, was an assistant at GU and has done a nice job there. Vandy cut its program, but their coach was the coach of the year in the Missouri Valley Conference. And VA Tech has been a better team than GU recently and plays in a great conference in the ACC, so it was somewhat surprising to hear their coach even interviewed. It tells you something about what people outside of GU think of its potential, particularly as they move to increase scholarships.

Looks like Muir's developing a pattern of hiring assistants who have worked with teams successful at high levels, rather than up-and-coming coaches from smaller leagues. (Kelly in football, Hagan in Volleyball, and this one). I'm interested in seeing how this works out. Any word from men's soccer alumni on the hire?

Many of Bobby Clark's assistants have gone on to head coaching positions and been successful. ND has built a great program over theyears, hopefully we will now be doing more aggressive nationwide recruiting.

HSB, in your insider information, you forgot this valuable tidbit...
"Wiese played professionally for the Bulawayo Highlanders in Zimbabwe for a year."
Prepare to see an upturn in Zimbabwean (?) recruits soon.

Looks like a good hire. Lets hope he brings a fresh approach to the team that puts them among the elite of the big east, cuz you could definatley see some promise this year at the few games I attended.
