Once again our lacrosse team was crushed by Maryland in the opening game. Other than Syracuse and Duke they are the toughest team on our schedule. Why do we always open with them. We have to play our best game to beat them and that's hard to do on opening day. St.Leos just started a lax program, maybe Coach U. should take a lesson from Pops and back off playing a national power on day 1.

Final was 10-4, for those who don't know. It's funny that despite returning everything on offense and losing one of the best defenders of all time, we still have a good defensive team and are totally inept on offense. Throw in some major problems at face off, and you get a bad opener. I agree with what Saxa71 says about opening with a top 3 team, but we've bounced back before from bad early losses to have good years. We'll be fine.
I hear Miles Kass looked good in his debut at goalie. For those who don't know, Kass was inside lacrosse's number 2 recruit last year, but he sat behind Rich D'Andrea. Rich has now moved to defense to free up goalie for Kass. D'Andrea has been solid over his career, but hopefully Kass can do more.
Not many freshman played, according to the box score. Some guys need to step up.

For some reason when we play UMD in the first game out team seems to forget everything they know about lacrosse both on offense & defense. This game was a mirror image of last year's game except the venue. Couldn't tell anything oneway or the other about Kass, He got no help at all but then again I didn't see "great" saves. Our shots on offense were so pathetic for most part that a blind person could have played in goal. All the shots whould have just hit him in the chest. As is Harry Alford is not blind and too beat him you have to get in close and hit the corners, something we just couldn't do yesterday.

Lots of deep shots and stuff right into the net (EDIT: The one attached to the end of HA's stick. Not the good one.) I got back on one of the student buses from the Cuse game when it was 3-2 with about 3 mins left in the second quarter...and it went pretty quickly downhill from there. Incidentally, yesterday's loss to Maryland was brought to you by the letters E, M, and O. Quite an orgy of penalties there in the third quarter, and UMd must have had at least 4 man up goals in that period alone. Pretty decent man-up attack they had going there, too. But, in the end, who knows what you take from the game, b/c this is becoming GU's annual tradition it seems--get blown out by Maryland in the opener, and it has really no impact on the rest of the season. Whatever.

Can someone please explain that ridiculous fight and what the heck our guy was thinking? What a miserable way to start the season. He embarassed himself twice and our school and on top of it all.

The fight started after some guys fell on the sideline. I think the general sentiment was that because of the bad officiating everyone was frustrated. Has nothing to do with the team, and as far as I am concerned doesn't show anything about the character of either UMd or us.
On the playing of national powers on the first game: We are a national power. Lacrosse has like thirteen games to impress the selection people for the NCAAs and we have to show ourselves able to keep up with them. Yes the result from this weekend do not seem good but they are a heck of a lot better than winning 20-4 against some team that just started the program. Besides, look at last year, we lost bad to the twerps and we ended up playing them to literally the last few seconds. Coach Urick (coach U sounds too much like Uzelac for my tastes) has to play all these teams in order to keep the prestige of the university up. Some u win and some u lose and we lost this one. That is all there is too it. Oh and watch the coach's interview on guhoyas. He explains this better than me.
