Ron Helmer, Director of the Georgetown University Men's and Women's Track & Field and Cross Country program, has been selected as the recipient of the "Coaches Achievement Program" presented by OppenheimerFunds, Inc. The "Coaches Achievement Program" honors coaches at select BIG EAST member institutions for excellence in coaching, mentoring and community service.
"The commitment of the BIG EAST Conference and its member institutions to excellence and performance are in perfect alignment with OppenheimerFunds' principles," said Bruce Dunbar, OppenheimerFunds, Inc. Senior Vice President and Director of Corporate Communications. "The special focus on coaching in this relationship extends our longstanding commitment to education and to the value of expertise and guidance in any aspect of life."
As part of their "Coaches Achievement Program," OppenheimerFunds will present Coach Helmer with a $5,000 donation for the Georgetown Track & Field and Cross Country programs.
The presentation will take place on Tuesday, January 17 during halftime of the Georgetown's men's basketball game vs. South Florida at MCI Center. For tickets to the game call 202.687.2449.
Coach Helmer is in his 20th season on the Hilltop and seventh as Director of the Georgetown University Men's and Women's Track & Field and Cross Country program. His impact on the Hoya program can been seen in the accomplishment of his student-athletes, as69 of which have garnered a total of 210 All-American certificates. At the NCAA Championships, he has guided 27 student-athletes or relay teams to a top-three finish, highlighted by four national championships. As for team accomplishments, Helmer has coached 20 top-10 finishes in NCAA Championship action, including a streak of 15-straight at the cross country championships. Among the top-10 finishes were seven top-four trophy finishes, including a fourth place finish at the 2002 NCAA Women's Cross Country Championships.
In addition, six of his teams have won Championships of America at the Penn Relays, he has been a part of 37 BIG EAST Championship teams, and nine of his student-athletes have been named the Robert A. Duffy Scholar-Athlete.
