The Ellington track was dedicated this last Sunday. All-American and world record holder, Jack Reilly, was back for the dedication. Jack is a double Hoya, going on to med school after graduating in 1963. He was my RA one year in New South during my stay at Georgetown. I saw him run at MSG, when I was still in HS. A link to the story and pictures of Jack and other alumni and current students on the track team are at guhoyas.collegesports.com/genrel/121205aad.html

Awesome. What's the permanent solution?

I have a feeling this will be a "semi-permanent" solution. If they didn't put a track around the football field in the MSF, I don't think they can fit a track on campus anymore.

There is no plan for a track around the MSF. When they drew up this master plan several years ago, there was going to be a track/soccer stadium "somewhere" on campus. If any of the board fans attended the night honoring the retirement for Francis X Gagliano you may remember the artists-architect drawings for the "Gagliano Track" that was going to be the centerpiece of this track soccer complex. A little more than a year later, Hoyas Unlimited was soliciting funds for this (Duke Ellington Track) project.
As a supporter of the track program I am relieved that the men and women's teams now have a place to train that is closer to campus. Kudos to the coaching staff for doing the most with far less facilities. That being said the track program deserves better than a shared one-fifth of a mile, four lane, track.

Seems ridiculous that they can't get a track put in around a football field. I mean, doesn't like EVERY high school in America have that same setup? I can't imagine that it's THAT expensive, so why not?
Also, could a track go around North Kehoe field? Not the astro-turf Kehoe, but the actual grass field where they play soccer?

I can't imagine that it's THAT expensive, so why not? The problem is the roads on either side don't leave the space to fit a track around the field and still have space for stands. Next time you walk by the MSF, take a look at how close the walls and stands are to the field...

Well the obvious solution is to make the field smaller then. Just because football players are bigger doesn't mean they don't have to share.

Not sure if the emoticon meant sarcasm, or if you're really asking about this, but I've yet to see a football field get away with being less than 100 yards long (+ 10-yard endzones on each side).

Either on top of astroturfed Kehoe (which desperately needs to get new grasstroturf like the MSF, TBird can attest, that stuff sucks), or North Kehoe where soccer plays now, we should put a track around it. It's inexcusable that our nationally ranked track team doesn't even have a facility that most HIGH SCHOOLS take for granted.
There problems with both. There are the drainage issues on Kehoe that killed the last track there, and I doubt North Kehoe has enough space. Either way, something has to be done. Elington track is a nice temporary solution (where exactly is it, can I run on it?), but something needs to be done fast. A soccer/track stadium sounds awesome, we just need to find a place to put it and get the funds, probably after the second phase of MSF is completed.
Call me selfish, but the first few years after I graduate, every donation I make to Georgetown will be to athletics. Because that's where I feel we need the most help. Our facilities are pathetic for a major D-I university, and we should care more about our student-athletes. The MSF is a step in the right direction, but more things need to be done.

Either on top of astroturfed Kehoe (which desperately needs to get new grasstroturf like the MSF, TBird can attest, that stuff stinks), Yeah, that turf is nasty. I think I'm going to have this scar on my leg for the rest of my life. And it's frickin' huge--the size of my calf. And looks like Africa (seriously). And I also will be donating solely to athletics for awhile.

Elington track is a nice temporary solution (where exactly is it, can I run on it?), but something needs to be done fast. It is across the street from the Med School. They probably have a schedule of track use. Since it is a shared community facility, I would think there would be times for you to run on it. And, as my surrogate, I would expect you to run a couple of laps on it for me. ;D

Cinders? That's pre Yates right?
I strained my knee playing football with some guys one night after we had run suicides on the field in ROTC PT that day.

Cinders? That's pre Yates right? Oh, yeah. Back in the days of cinder tracks, about '64-'65.

We even had one opponent who had asphalt - always had an easy day of practice after a meet there. Had a concrete one at my HS. We won state my senior year (I wasn't running in that meet though) and that was at the track at SC which along with Clemson was the only rubberized one in the state at the time.

Until about 5-6 years ago, my son's HS did not have an all-weather track. I am not sure if it was cinder or just dirt - it was just ugly and in bad repair. Concrete one? Lots of knee and leg injuries? Concrete is nine times as hard as asphault, which is why most runners/joggers run on the road and not on sidewalks.

It may have been some sort of asphalt or composite all weather surface.. it was green, which was one of the school colors. Probably some sort of material I wasn't familiar with at the time. I ran Cross Country as well as track (I did 1 mi. and 2 mi. in track) and I ran alot in the military so I understand totally what you're saying about asphalt vs. concrete. There's a stretch of a major 2 lane road in my hometown that has a wide parking area for about a quarter-mile stretch and people run in that all the time.
