I was looking at the list of alumni finishers at the Homecoming 5K on campus recently. The top 10 reads like a who's who in Georgetown 800m history:
Finish Time Name 1 16:32:00 Jesse O'Connell 2 16:34:00 Thomas Weiler 3 16:52:00 Ali Najjar 4 17:06:00 Jonevan Hornsby 5 17:14:00 Glacken 6 17:43:00 Ezra Richards 7 17:49:00 Hisham Ibrahim 8 18:01:00 Rich Zielinski 9 18:08:00 Zach Mason 10 18:34:00 David Cuddington
Three of the top six runners were (along with Chris Lukezic) Penn Relay 4 x 800 Relay champions in 2004. At #8, Rich Zielinski was IC4A champion in the half mile in 1967 or 1968.

Yes, he was probably just cruising. I don't know who Tom Weiler is, but he ran a good race; Jesse probably ran with him and outkicked him in the end.

Weiler is a Notre Dame XC alumni.

Weiler is a Notre Dame XC alumni. Well, I am glad that Jesse beat him then.

At #8, Rich Zielinski was IC4A champion in the half mile in 1967 or 1968. Weird, there was also a Rich Zielinski who ran 3K in the Class of 2001, and who is in the DC area, so I just assumed that was him.

Maybe that is so. Maybe the son of the IC4A champ. Actually, your assumption is probably correct, because 18:01 for a 59-year old is pretty darn good.

The '01 Zielinski hailed from near Eugene, OR, and post-graduation taught in South America and got a graduate degree in economics in the UK, before returning to DC, where he works for a small firm while moonlighting as a DC tour guide. Great guy, as I'm sure the other R.Z. was as well.

Thanks for the info, TrueHB. Yes, I seem to remember a Zielinski from Oregon that was on the team. I don't know if the two Z's are related. My finest track accomplishment at GU (I was not on the track team) was beating Rick Z. in the 100 yard dash. My friend and I were at the upper field, where the track used to be, and Rick was finishing up his workout. My friend and I were going to race each other at 100 yards, and we asked if he wanted to join us. Since I started us, I got a quick lead, and my friend spend the rest of the race catching up to me. I figured at the end, it was a tie, but Rick was about five yards back. Morale: if you are going to race an IC4A 880 yard champ, do it when he is tired after a hard workout.

Okay, I confess that my memory is not what it used to be. The Rick Zielinski that finished 8th was the runner from Oregon, class of 2001. My RZ was not even Rick, but Robert Zieminski. Close but no cigar. Apologies to all for confusing everybody. In '68 Bob ran 1:48.3 for 880 yards (longer than 800m) to win the IC4A meet.
