The Chicago Tribune named its All State Scholar-Athletes this morning, one of whom is Taylor Martin, a tennis player who will be attending Georgetown. Here's her write-up:
Taylor Martin
HIGH SCHOOL: Hinsdale Central
SPORT: Tennis
CLASS RANK: 9 / 572
A four-time state placer in doubles, she is nationally ranked in the United States Tennis Association. Had a 5.84 GPA and will attend Georgetown in the fall. She wrote for the school newspaper and was editor of the features section as a senior.
"I have always been the type of person who tried to succeed in as many areas as possible," said Martin, who wants to study English or creative writing.
9 out of 572 at Hinsdale Central is really an accomplishment. A hearty welcome to Ms. Martin and the Class of 09.

Probably used a weighted gpa where grades in harder (AP or honor) classes are worth more than regular classes. It's usually used to encourage people to take hard classes w/o worrying about their gpa getting destroyed and to make sure that the class ranks aren't skewed by having all the kids in easier classes who are getting straight A's ahead of the kids in the hard classes getting A- and A's. So that means she was probably taking a lot of hard classes and doing very well in them.

Still, in my school, AP classes were worth +1 pt. Since a regular A was worth 4 pts, how the heck do you get a GPA of almost SIX?

That was my point. Usually most systems are on the 4.0 GPA, with honors and AP weighted to make it 4.7 max. They must be on the 5.0 system and with weighted grades, the max must be close to six.
