No offense intended here (my point is directed against the media)... I wish there wasn't so much focus on the black vote in the context of Obama's candidacy. Obama has repeatedly said that he is not in this thing to seek votes because of his skin color. So, why should we expect that he might or should we be surprised if the black vote isn't pointing his way? (I contrast this with Hillary's comments today about becoming the first woman President)
On another note, I just finished watching some reruns of the speeches at the DNC winter meeting, and Obama came across with a level of maturity that we haven't seen in a candidate in several cycles. His tone stands in stark contrast to the "polished" speeches of Clinton and Edwards. Edwards seemed to simply dust off the "Two Americas" speech with a new spin. And by "polished," I mean products of their message bozos. More drastically, it provided a nice contrast to Fox News and its viewers who continue to put forth and digest unsubstantiated stories (i.e. the madrassa myth) that demean the offices that these candidates hold and seek.
I agree with the critics who say he doesn't have ideas. At the same time, what ideas are required of the Republican candidates? On what issues are they required to present a detailed plan at this stage in order to enter the conversation? Now is not the time for plans -- it is time for sniff tests.
(Incidentally, I don't like our media either and have tried to convey as much, by noting Rather's missteps in an earlier post and discussing Fox News' evasions of journalistic integrity, which have become quite serious. More broadly, I think the quality of the media is at one of its lowest points - if not the lowest - in my lifetime.)
