Whatever you think about Rummy, I always thought it was pretty badass he had a "standing desk" and that he basically went through an average work day never sitting down.

I like what MrSixer had to say. Now that election day and its accompanying circus are behind us we can focus on things that truly matters. Like Hoya basketball!!

Bush was for Rummy before he was against him.
Joking aside, I think this announcement was ill-timed. Rummy had to go and should have gone a long time ago, but what is another week or two given that there likely won't be any kind of fight over his replacement? The announcement was it was timed makes it seem like our foreign policy and approach to the war is tied to elections.
On second thought, this is somewhat naive considering the last 2 elections and how war was strategically used to mobilize the base.

Jersey, I think Rummy could have resigned months ago -- and maybe helped Republicans do a little better at the polls.
But since he didn't, it made more sense for him to leave right away and set a new direction for the Administration right after the election. Why drag it out? He would just be a target and so would Bush. This is an opening and an opportunity for W to set a new direction.
Of course, he is walking out on a HUGE mess in Iraq and Bush will have to face that himself.
Has anyone heard from Cheney lately?

Rummy tried to resign previously, but the President refused to accept his resignation. Rummy was wise to try and resign then, and it was to the detriment of this country that he was not taken up on his offer. My problem is that the timing of the announcement was opportunistic, as you mention. The timing of it followed an election that sent a clear message worldwide that the "war on terror" as defined and fought by President Bush has been rejected worldwide. And, President Bush caved right in. In doing so, he sent the message that he has stated numerous times that he wouldn't send, which is that his policy will be affected by politics of this kind. Anyway, my $.02. BTW, Cheney was "shooting lawyers" on Election Day.
