He was Russian when Russian was totally uncool. I always presumed that was a stage name of sorts, but the article made no mention of that. I wonder if that was his given name or if maybe he officially changed his name to that.

Some of the articles on his campaign website indicate he is really Croatian and his given name was Josip Nikolai Peruzovic. I assume he changed it to Nikolai Volkoff since his campaign stuff has that all over it (Rick Steiner was recently DQed as a school board candidate in the Atlanta area because Rick Steiner was on the ballot and not his legal name - Rechsteiner.)

You've got to think that some wrestlers change their legal names, otherwise, Governor Jesse Ventura (aka James Janos) would have been tripped up on the name point. The only other wrestler whose name pops up from time to time politically is Ric Flair (Richard Fleihr), but apparently he's been going through some financial issues which literally forces him to stay in wrestling at the age of 57. Still, if he ever did get into N.C. politics, imagine him pulling out some of these quotes on the campaign trail... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ric_Flair#Quotes

Well, we might as well mention Bob Backlund (or maybe it is Mr. Bob Backlund to me), who appears to keep the same name in and out of the squared circle. His official website and some history are contained here: www.backlund2000.com/politics/index.html?On the issue of name changes, I have to think it varies by state since elections are administered by the states. Some wrestlers may also change their legal names, as you mentioned. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I'm pretty sure Steve Austin changed his name...I think I saw an interview where he talked about signing a ton of autpgraphs and then accidentally signing "Steve Austin" on checks instead of his real name.

You're correct, Joe, according to Wikipedia, which says, ""Stone Cold" Steve Austin, is an actor and professional wrestler. His birth name was Steve Anderson; he took on the surname Williams when he was adopted by his stepfather, Ken (his biological father had left the family when Steve was a small child)." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%22Stone_Cold%22_Steve_Austin

Heard from the press secretary for Volkoff that he's on the ballot as "Nikolai Volkoff" Peruzovic and that nicknames are legal in MD.

I haven't heard anything mentioned. I read his book and there wasn't anything about money problems. But of course after decades of Limousine Ridin' and LearJet flyin' ... not to mention Tailor made from head to toe ... and what with about a thousand of those $10,000 robes .... WOOOOOOOOOO!!

I hope he recruits The Iron Sheik as his campaign manager, and sings the Russian national anthem while being sworn in.
Go Nikolai! I support Commie Puke!

Flair was tight with former SC Governor Carroll Campbell (who just recently passed away from Alzheimers complications at a young age for that.) There were rumors he might run for office in either NC or SC at one point.
