Saved up money to move into the world of HDTV. Anyone out there have an HDTV willing to share their recommendations? Looking to spend about $1000 or a little more and hook it up to the DirecTv dish.

The best two brands out there in terms of picture quality are LG and Sharp - LG is slightly cheaper and has slightly less definition than Sharp. It all depends on whether you want to trade screen size for picture quality. If a large screen is what matters then you can go with virtually any brand because the larger sized Sharp and LG's cost $5,000+

I got a 37" LG LCD and I love it. Kinda spendy, at just over $2k at CircuitCity or Best Buy.

I don't have any recommendations for a specific tv- only that digital tv is a vastly superior product in general than cable tv. You can't REALLY go wrong because anything will be an improvement in quality.
I DO, however, have a recommendation in terms of your service provider. Most telephone companies or cable companies offer IPTV in conjunction with voice and data. It's called the Triple Play, and it's an amazing deal. I would check with your cable/telecommunications provider to see if it's available- it could save you big bucks on phone and internet in the future.

I spent about $1,200 at CostCo for a sweet 43 inch HDTV about a year ago. I kind of forget now, but I think it is DLP technology. It is only about 8-10 deep, so almost looks like a flat-screen. Unless you want to hang it on a wall, I suggest the DLP route. It will save you big bucks over the flat screens.

Thanks for the info, I think I have a little bit of time to decide since we're probably going to wait until we buy a house in a couple of months.

Heard the new Sony RRMX or whatever it is blows DLP out of the water. But I haven't seen it.

I got a 30-inch or so Sony LCD HDTV. Unreal. Best purchase I've ever made. Especially when you factor in high def channels via Comcast.
Bit more than the $1000 you're looking to spend, though...

Another pro-HDTV argument:
With NBC broadcasting the entire winter Olympics in High Def, you obviously get all the events in HD. Looks great. But a side bonus? New HD channels! Since the Olympics started, we now have USA in HD. Why is that so important you ask? I'll tell you...
... Knight Rider in HD.
