Am I the only one with one on pre-order, to be picked up exactly two weeks from today?! C'mon people... I know I'm not the only total gaming nerd here. Am I?
I'm not sure what the exact numbers are, but people in the video game business point to the release of Halo 2 as the moment X-Box pulled ahead of Playstation. And now that X-Box 360 is beating PS3 to market, my guess is they solidify that lead by being first movers in the new generation of consoles (despite the fact Sony is using Blu-Ray technology for the PS3).
Especially considering Halo 3 is more than likely going to be released on the same day as PS3!

X-Box never pulled ahead of PS2 in total sales - do you mean they sold more than the PS2 post Halo-2?

I don't have hard statistics, but in terms of total sales since both consoles launched, I'm fairly sure xBox still trails PS2 because of PS2's overwhelming early success. However, I believe xBox has been outselling PS2 on a month-to-month basis for quite some time, even pre-dating the release of Halo 2. I'm not really an online player, but I think it has a lot to do with the much better xBox Live compared to PS2 online gaming. xBox has always been the better console, there's not a whole lot of dispute about that, it just took some time for it's advantages (power, graphics, online, etc.) to take hold in the market.
Despite my love of new and fancy consumer electronics, I do not have a 360 on pre-order, because with a family the size of a small third-world country, I have to do a lot of saving leading up to Christmas. I imagine I'll have to pick one up before too long, however, post holiday season. I shudder at the prospect of not being able to play Halo 3 if it is only released for 360, which is a distinct possibility. Damn you Bill Gates you mad genius!
(not to mention Quake 4)

Total sales between X-Box and PS2 will always be PS2, considering their multi-year headstart to market. You're absolutely right. I felt safe making that claim as a friend of mine works in purchasing for a few retail outlets - says that once people caught wind of what Halo 2 would bring to the table (coupled with the exploding popularity of X-Box Live) they were restocking X-Boxes at a much greater rate than PS2's. And it hasn't let up since. Now that 360 is beating PS3 to the market, I expect X-Box to really assert itself in the gaming world - especially with free X-Box Live Silver memberships to anyone who owns a console. I think for PS3 to fight back, they're going to need more than Blu-Ray discs. Of course, all of this is moot. Both are going to sell zillions of consoles, and both are going to be obsolete again in four, five years or so

"Was," 'bridge... "was."
I was a dyed-in-the-wool PS guy... but sold it to get me my X-Box. Game play is just so much better, the game selection is insignificant (PS2 does have a LOT more crappy titles, for sure), and the system itself does so much more for ya.

I mean fun and all but absolutely requires a lot of people playing and lot of pot. whereas I can play GTA or Madden indefinitely.

i am working on a video game awards show here at my job...i have seen the XBox 360 hands-on and footage of the PS3...PS3 makes everything else look like child's play. the horsepower difference is going to be a greater difference than the one that X-Box currently enjoys over PS2. PS3 is going to be a blue ray DVD player to boot. i'd suggest you guys go with the PS3...for all the 3rd party games [ie madden] it's going to be better...unless you are a halo fanatic. i myself am not.
i'll be buying the nintendo and the Ps3. the nintendo thing only for Zelda, Mario games, and the ability to download any game in the old nintendo library, from mike tyson's punch out to metroid prime.

Here's the thing - X-Box currently has a hardware advantage over PS2... but is it overwhelming? Is X-Box far and away better than PS2? Sure, slightly... but we're not talking lightyears. The same is going to be said for PS3 and X-Box 360. Yeah, PS3 is going to have the gameplay hardware advantage, but is it going to be lightyears? No. If you want a system based solely on the guts, yeah... PS3 is better. X-Box has the advantage of infinitely better on-line play, and Halo 3 is going to probably be one of the best selling console game of all time. Its a toss up. Here's a great article on the comparison: hardware.gamespot.com/Story-ST-x-1985-x-x-x?tag=boxcar_all_features_imageAs for the blu-ray DVD player, the battle between blu-ray and HD-DVD isn't going to come to a head and matter for a long time. By the time it does, PS4 and X-Box 720 are going to be coming down the pipeline. Look at it this way... when PS2 and X-Box came out, how many people had HD-tv's, or anything that supported component cables or optical audio? Now those technologies are just starting to come to the fore. Having a regular dvd or a blu-ray one isn't going to mean much to the overwhelming majority of people for quite some time. Its just going to be something cool to have. Like I said... both consoles are going to sell like hot cakes, and all I can say is I wish I had the cash for both. But since I'm a huge fan of on-line play and Halo (who's pimpness is multiplied by a trillion when you can play multi-player on-line), Microsoft is getting my cash.

XBox wins solely because it's alot easier to type to a friend "Dude, hold B and left trigger to deke" than it is to type...well, there's no quick way to type the names of the PS2 buttons, except for X.
I have a bunch...nay, scads...of video game nerd friends. I was in the market to get a new system last year (winning the Super Bowl on All-Madden mode with 15-minute quarters four straight years in Madden 2001 on N64 had finally gotten boring), and asked around for advice. The verdict was nearly unanimous in favor of XBox. A year later, I must say, I am incredibly grateful to them for their input, as I was leaning towards PS2 (some of my friends on campus had one and I had played that a bit). Granted, they are all Halo fiends, and I am still struggling through the first Halo that I borrowed from a friend, but they all owned/played both systems more extensively than I had. The 16-person Halo matches that we used to have (yes, we're those guys) every other week during the summer were great, too. From what I knew, PS2 didn't have that capability.
As for XBox Live...wow. I'm in a league for NHL 2K6, as I was for both NHL and NFL 2K5. The fifty bones is well worth it after just a few games in my mind. I hope they keep it up after XBox 360 comes out.
I probably won't get an XBox 360 anytime soon, mostly because I will be able to play it whenever I go to a friend's house. I also don't need anything special; a controller, a TV, and sports games do the trick for me. Hell, I still play Nintendo (8-bit) from time to time when I'm at home.

All I know is this. I'm pretty confident G4's Morgan Webb has surpassed Erin Andrews as Mrs. BuffaloHoya.

I got my 360 days ago...have had 3 different problems loading three different games- all of them impeccably clean discs. All three problems were completely different. One saying the flawless disc must be dirty. One saying I should put the disc into a 360 console which obviosuly I had- that was a fun one. And some other one about the video in the game being outdated, so it wouldn't load. Really awesome Microsoft. Merry F' ing Christmas. I would say I have an issue loading games 30-40% of the time I try. Once the game gets going, seems to be fine but I really have not played too long yet. I have had problems with Call of Duty, Madden And Tiger Woods, all brand new, so it must be the damn Xbox.
Anyone else have issues?

Bin - I had this problem with my x-box when it first came out - Microsoft has surprisingly good tech support and they will replace it if the problem persists. I recommend giving them a call.

I will resort to that soon St Pete. I am just really annoyed because its not easy for me to recieve packages, especially valuble ones, and I will be Editeded if this takes even a week, which surely it will. And I am angry because these problems are widespread enough (having checked some websites) that you can be sure this was a Christmas/PS3 rush job and they KNEW they were going to have casualties. I never had one problem with my original x box in two plus years. Never. Now several problems in a couple of days, having just spent $400. Doesn't sit well. No matter how good the customer services is. It better be good, they were expecting this for sure and they are just trying to control the PR damage.

I've never had any problems with mine, other than the fact that it is a huge time sink.

Got mine New Year's Eve. Didn't go out that night. Have been playing non-stop since. No problems here. Perfect Dark: Zero and Call of Duty 2 are unreal.
Waiting for Madden '07 or whatever EA decides to throw at us now that they have the ESPN rights and Madden is at NBC for Sunday Night Football.
Anyone have College Hoops 2k6 yet? I want to get it for obvious reasons, but am debating on whether or not I should wait until next year's when they (hopefully) will have an Action Replay for the 360 so I can get all the rosters (and they have the sweet G'Town unis and fight song back).
