Still have a hard time digesting the attack on London this morning. I can't figure what this means, beyond Blair enjoying more support than he had in the past. I suspect the UK will rally around Blair much the same way the US rallied around Dubya in the wake of 9/11.
Any thoughts?

We'll be in our graves and we'll still be fighting terrorists. Our lives are forever changed as 9/11, Madrid and London prove. My prayers go out to those in London who must go through this. God Bless.

What is the genesis of this push to export terrorism. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but prior to 9/11 had any terrorist activity occurred so far away from where the supposed wrong was actually occurring? The IRA bombed London for a while, but that only meant crossing the Irish Sea. I guess the Munich Olympics could be an example, although the terrorists struck at Israelis who happened to be at a convenient stage.
Assuming for the moment that I'm not operating with a grievous memory lapse, what lies at the heart of this export of terrorism? I don't think it's fanaticism alone. I'd submit poverty and the perception of disenfranchisement on the part of a lot of the Middle East.

I think the increase in the "exporting" of terrorism (ie terrorist acts taking place away from the immediate area of conflict) is mostly due to the increased ease of international travel and communication. Terrorists would have done this earlier if it were easier. There is more impact for their purposes if people think they can strike anywhere at any time.
Also, AQ is a little bit different. They have many goals, including establishment of a worldwide Islamic caliphate. In order to do this, they have to destroy Western society and government. So their "battlefield" is worldwide. It isn't limited to Israel/Palestine, like HAMAS, or to Colombia, like FARC or ELN. Essentially, any act of terrorism committed by AQ anywhere could be considered a "local" act for them-- they technically aren't "exporting" terrorism, no matter where they strike.
My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.

My prayers and thoughts are with them as well. Got a freaked out e-mail from a friend who is studying in Oxford and would have been on the Jubilee Line (where all of the tube attacks occured) if his bus into London wasn't running late that morning - very scary stuff.
