To get things rolling, I was pleasantly surprised by Kerry's performance, particularly as I wasn't expecting much of him. I thought President Bush seemed incredibly on edge, and on the defensive throughout. He's a master at staying on message, but the message kept him from being able to coherently answer most of Lehrer's questions...

He seemed to have his highs and lows. Kerry seemed more even keel - more steady and much smoother. I think that Bush had better substantive points (of course), but Kerry had a good style. Anyone else think that the DNC's efforts to put out a tape of President Bush's reactions to Kerry's answers is a bit of a stretch? It seems as though the Dems got burned by AlGore's sighing and such last time around so they came into this debate determined to do the same to Bush.

Kerry and Bush showed their true colors last night; I'll leave at that! Speaking of Al Gore and sighing, he had some pre-debate advice for Kerry in the op-ed section of the NYT this week. He closed the piece with a hilarious self-referential allusion--funny reading. I think, deep down, he's still harboring plans for 2008 but they're delusional at best.....

Actually, there was a really good New Yorker piece on Gore that came out a couple of weeks ago -- basically stating that he knows he ran his last campaign in 2000. As a result, he feels that he's more able to speak his mind on certain things, since no opponent will ever have to use those words against him. V. interesting piece -- even if you're not pro-Gore.

Yeah, I read that article but still came away thinking this guy harbors a deep desire to make a "Nixonian '68" comeback, external aversions to the contrary.....

Crazy at it may sound, I wouldn't be surprised if Algore would want to tangle with Hillary in 08.
I do think by 2008 there will be a new generation on both sides of the fence. The Boomers may have had their run.

I'm not going to say anything other than this: I thought it was pretty funny when Bush reffered to something as "Pre-September 10th Policy".

You mean before those "folks" made us reconsider our priorities. I'm glad we have a leader who "just knows how the world works." Can we confirm that that was really Ferrell in the debate and Bush is taped up in a closet somewhere? I hope so...cause that was almost funnier than the stereotypes.
