Early indications are that many Spanish voters are blaming their goverment in today's elections for the Madrid bombings, alleging that Aznar has made Spain a target for al queda by supporting the liberation of Iraq. This is both moral cretinism and sheer stupidty. It also reveals what is wrong with so many Europeans in the post-Cold War world, an inability to identify right and wrong, and appoint culpability accordingly. I firmly believe this moral cowardice derives from the fact that the US guaranteed Continental security (and thus prosperity) for the last half century rather than the Europeans doing it for themselves. We allowed them to slash their defense bugets and told them we would foot the bill for the weapons systems and forces that protected them, and they got morally fat and lazy to the point where when an enemy confronts them, all they can think of is saying, "how did WE get blamed for this? Please Mr. bin Laden, go back to murdering Americans if you will, we had no problem with Saddam! We don't like those vulgar Americans anyway. Please leave us out of this fight of liberalism vs. fanatical religous tyranny- we don't really have a horse in that race!" Many Europeans, notably of the their large centre-left, don't dwell in geopolitical reality. Don't these idiots understand that al queda hates the West because it is free, not because most of it is American-lead? The people of al queda detest a nation like Spain because of its secularism and tolerance, and even because they want it back into the realm of islamic facisms- as it was under the Moors. THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT TO BE REASONED WITH, THEY ARE TO BE DESTROYED. Yes, these people are still upset that Spain is no longer ruled by Muslim clerics, you think you can reasomn with them? They are still Editeded about the Crusades, and think that they are YOUR fault! There is nothing that sickens me more than seeing the cowardice of those who prefer to point anger away from those responsible (ie. the murderers) in some whimsical attempt to pretend that al queda is merely punishing Spain for Aznar's principled stand. Why is much of the left ready to hide from direct conflict with an enemy that would subjugate our women, execute our homosexuals, and impose religious fascism on us? Shoudn't the left embrace direct conflict with such an enemy? Of course they should, but too many refuse to accept the reality of the situation, becuase they have been spolied by decades of never having to actually fight for anything other than welfare entitlements from their governments who can afford it partially because they let the Americans protect them. Its our classical liberalism they seek to destroy. How can people seek to hide from that enemy, when it might be destroyable, and wait for it to pick up some loose nukes? We don't normally bicker about the "why" Jane Doe was raped, and who might have put her in danger by asking her to walk at night in a bad neighborhood, when we might be a bit more concerned about WHO did the raping, and removing them from society first so as to prevent the next rape. So it makes me uneasy when the BBC predictably leads their Madrid bombings story with the "we need to know who did this and why." It seems to me that asking "why" is offensively inappropriate in the hours after a mass murder.
