Bob McDonough was a great supporter of everything GU but his passion was the mens basketball team. A link to an article partially about him published as a lead up to the sweet 16 in 2001 is here www.hoyasaxa.com/sports/archives/archive0301.htmif you scroll down to pre-game coverage, the article itself does not appear to be archived anymore Below is the note from the OC Alumni Assoc President, PM me for more details: It is with tremendous sadness that I announce the passing of Bob McDonough on Wednesday, November 21, 2007, after a brief illness. Fortunately his wife, Simone, immediate family, and priest were with him at the time of his death. For anyone who was blessed to have known Bob, he was the consummate Hoya who transformed his four years at Georgetown into a lifelong passion. Very few things brought him greater joy than a discussion about its past, present, or future. His devotion and philanthropic efforts were so strong that the Business School was named after him, (McDonough School of Business). We are so honored to have had Bob in our midst. One of the highlights of our Club Calendar is the Student Send-Off. Every year he so graciously offered his glorious beachside home as our event location. Anyone who has ever attended this event, will recall the charismatic Hoya who led everyone in the Fight Song. It is very bittersweet that I so vividly recall that the most spirited rendition of that song took place last August. It was as if the angels were giving us one final gift and example of his love for us to always remember and cherish. A Funeral Mass is planned for Friday. Fr. Leo Donovan will be concelebrating the Mass with other priests. Please keep Bob's wife Simone, and his family, in your thoughts and prayers. We have lost a great friend. He was one of the best. Please take care. Hoya Saxa, Debbie Marie Zaslav Co-President

I grew up not two miles from Bob McDonough's house. He was one of the first Hoyas I ever met. I'll never forget his fleet of cars, with their "Hoya 1" and "Saxa 2" license plates. An incredible person who created an enviable legacy. May he rest in peace.

Bob's Student Send Off was my first "official" G'town event between GAAP weekend and the beginning of classes freshman year; it was a fantastic event at which I met with people I still consider friends. His place at Capo Beach was mere yards from the fire pit in which I threw beach parties every year since I was 11. He was a consummate gentleman and joy to be associated with, and his committment to Georgetown was second to none. His wife Simone is warm, caring, and wonderful as well. He will be sorely missed by the entire Georgetown community.
Godspeed, Mr. McDonough.

Bob was good friend to many and would bleed blue & gray. He is in my prayers.
His last words prior to parting would always be Hoya Saxa. I will miss him.

I also attended his student send offs each year, a tradition for Hoyas in the Orange County area. I found him to be a very welcoming and kind host in addition to being a very proud and passionate Hoya. A true loss.

Mr. McDonough was an inspiring figure who gave much but asked for very little. I'm sure all those who've met him will remember him.

Mr. McDonough was/is Georgtown. When I think of the Hilltop, the first two people that come to mind are Pops and McDonough.

I never met Mr. McDonough, but my classmates from Orange County gave rave reviews about him and his sendoffs. I was always envious that GU students from Santa Ana to San Clemente had an alumnus who was generous enough and cared enough to set up such an event. Kids from Orange County came to Georgetown knowing other kids from Southern California and already bleeding Hoya Blue. No sendoff event in my area came close to what those posting in this thread experienced.
I went to a classmate's wedding in SoCal this summer and the Georgetown fight song was a centerpiece of the reception. Based on what I have heard, I think Bob McDonough would have liked that and probably helped influence it.

Did you, or did you not, meet a certain future roommate of ours at one of those send-offs?

That was what was so cool about Mr. McDonough's send off event it gave you a chance to meet some friends before you got on campus.

I attended the services on Friday, Leo presided over the ceremonies, Jack DeGioia gave a eulogy as did Ed Conner (another Hoya), Bernard Muir was among the many in the crowd with GU ties. Some people expected Bill and or Hillary Clinton to show up but the Clintons were not in attendance. Georgetown was all over the event just the way Bob would have wanted it.
Below is the obit from the program, I thought some people might find it of interest.
