Kochard has a pretty tough job -- lots of risk out there right now.

The New York Times article underscores a point I've been making on another board about harnessing donor enthusiasm in an appropriate way. There is a student-run effort going on at Xavier to start a club football program; this has sparked a heated debate over donors driving a school's fundraising with respect to restarting football on any level.
I have pointed out that donor enthusiasm - and this is as true for Georgetown as it is for Xavier - is a force that should be harnessed for the school's benefit. This is especially true in an increasingly competitive fundraising environment. I don't know whether there are stats available for this, but I am sure that Georgetown's recent basketball success has helped increase giving to the athletics proram and to Georgetown in general. Those who support one aspect of a school will, 9 times out of 10, support it in other ways.
The new multi-sports facility at Georgetown is another plus - it's great to see the crowds at Hoya fb games the past two years (a far cry from watching games on the windswept field up behind McDonough). In fact, the whole Xavier debate has made me want to make a special gift to G'town for the athletics program, which I will do sometime this year. I did some cartoons for the program years ago, so it's a good donor fit.
What gets people fired up for the school in a positive way is a potential fundraising bonanza. I hope that Georgetown and my dad's alma mater, Xavier, will capitalize on these opportunities in the years ahead.
