So, wanna hear something weird? I was back on the Hilltop last week for a visit (first in 2+ years), buying up a storm at the Leavey bookstore. Much better now than when I was there! I digress... Anyway, there was some sort of college touring thing going on there, and there were three rising HS senior girls (from what I gathered) in the gals sweatshirt area. Well, one of them says, "Oh my God, I soooo want to go here, let's hold hands and pray the Rosary that we get in." The other two are like, "Absolutely." So, they just start saying "Hail Mary..." On one hand, that's really nice they want to be Hoyas so badly. Love the enthusiasm ladies. On the other hand, isn't that just weird in an inarticulable way? I also chuckle every time I see that Notre Dame commercial where the girl is lighting candles at the foot of the Virgin Mary in church until she finally gets the acceptance letter. I'm a pretty devout Roman Catholic, but this is pretty creepy stuff, folks! Though the Leavey bookstore thing is creepy, at least it wasn't nationally broadcast.

Personally, I reserve saying the Rosary for quiet prayer time, or at the side of the sick, or for funerals. I try not to ask for intervention on "selfish" things (by the tone of their voices, these parochial school girls seemed awe-struck and just wanted to have a place to go to that is "cool"). But I must admit on occasion I do ask for the Hoyas to bring home a W. Yup, I'm human too.
Anyway, I also found it weird that they were doing it in a bookstore. Even if it is at this nation's proto-Catholic University's bookstore. I dunno, I guess I was raised to do things like that in private, in a solemn manner. This just seemed inappropriate and selfish.
The Notre Dame commercial is just weird. Even my wife (a Notre Dame grad) finds it creepy and incredibly exclusive. She also acknowledges that her alma mater has been hijacked by the Right. And she's a Republican!

Relgion and faith is personal, quiet and solemn. Interesting. Is relgion based upon community.
That said, it is a little funny/different that this occurred in the bookstore and, quite frankly, I don't think God cares where any of those ladies goes to school...

I think saying the Rosary in the middle of a bookstore, and for seemingly selfish reasons, is weird. Prayer in public and with others (the community is the Church) is fine by me.

Of all the locations on Georgetown's campus, I would say that the bookstore is possibly the least conducive to prayer...especially an intensely contemplative prayer like the Rosary. I guess some people might pray as they walk in that they not get ripped off...but those prayers are seldom answered.
