Someone reminded me of a little "study" I've been meaning to do for a while about the appearance of Georgetown in rap lyrics. The Hoyas definitely benefit from Alan Iverson's stature in the hip hop world, and from the recent emphasis on the "old school." Nothing is more old school in sports than JT and the 1980s Hoyas, so I thought we'd see some pretty good mentions. And lo and behold, there are LOTS of shoutouts.
Anyway, most of the results would be censored by the board, so I'll just give you the links.
Songs that mention Georgetown (including The Game, Mos Def, Terror Squad, Ice Cube, Outkast etc...These are big names, for you "haters" out there )

Songs that mention the word Hoya (none use it correctly - Ice Cube thinks it's a bulldog, but that's to be expected.)

Songs that mention John Thompson. Includes the line "defeatin me is like Latrell chokin up John Thompson." I have no idea what it means, but I like it.

Finally, we got tons of mentions of Ewing, Iverson, and (to a lesser extent) Mourning/Mutumbo. Ewing's name must rhyme really well, cause it's everywhere.
I sort of browsed around the other BE schools, and you'll be glad to know I couldn't find any mentions of Cuse, UConn, and very few of St. Johns. I feel comfortable saying that we have the MOST street cred in the BE! Respect!
Does any of this matter, other than as an excuse for me not to do real work? I think it does, a little. Hip hop is ubiquitious among 95% of the kids we want to recruit every year. If they, in the dim recesses of their minds, have the impression of Georgetown as cool, than that has to help a bit. I see kids walking around New York all the time in Hoya throwbacks and that sort of stuff. Now, some of these kids are in for a reality check when they come to the campus, because Georgetown is more Frank Sinatra than 50 Cent. But it's all good.
Anyone want to do a similar endeavor for country music? Maybe the next Larry Bird is out there somewhere, listening to the ballad of Craig Esherick.
