I didn't even notice till the article in The Hoya. It's pretty awesome in terms of the tradition aspect but I guess its dangerous and costly to replace.
Why don't they let us check out the clock tower on traditions day or something? I've been dreaming about getting up there since I got here. I just want to see what it looks like up there and how awesome the view is, I dont plan on stealing the hands, haha.

It is probably some of the freshmen that I have had in the past two NSOs. I have been telling them about the old tradition and actually, cough, urging them, double cough, to ummm embrace the past...

From what I hear, it was seniors. Just a rumor, but if it's true, it wouldn't surprise me. I just hope they don't screw up the second part of the tradition

I hear it was seniors as well ...
I also heard that DOPS has video tape of the theft - which I believe is completely untrue - because they would have questioned some of them by now if they knew who they were. Right? ....
I'm also a little upset that DOPS hasn't sent out a Public Safety Alert reporting that the hands were stolen and that DOPS "canvased the area with negative results".

Has DOPS ever succesfully located or caught anyone? I remember last year they actually saw some kids vandalizing Healy, but got outran.

Its hard to believe that DOPS would get outrun - they seem to be in prime physical condition. btw, isn't that what the chariots are for? Giving DOPS a chance to catch people in low speed chases?

haha, it would be great if they could actually get them to the Vatican this time...it would have drawn much more attention if they would have stolen the hands on the Healy Lawn side, but I guess they couldn't for some reason

I think they were stolen every year that I was at GU (on the Healy lawn side). We came to expect it.

The DOPS Blotter isn't on The Hoya website. Could you post its contents here?

Thanks.
Also, a question for those on the board who may be more experienced in stealing Healy clock tower hands than I: How does the University go about getting them back? Does the Vatican just know, or does DeGioia have to contact the Pope? That would be one interesting phone call to overhear.

I think they just buy new hands for the clock. Insuring packages that large for international freight has to be incredibly expensive.

I remember hearing that at one point in the 80s, the hands were switched from wood to some type of metal. so the next group of students who stole them couldn't afford the postage to the Vatican, so they dropped them off in front of the White House instead.

The hands are back in DOPS possession after the Non-senior perps turned them in willfully. Punishment has not yet been determined. Positive pressure to be easy on the tradition-protecting students is requested by the student body! Stay tuned to future Hoya editions to get the full scoop.

Let my people go!
If............they can sing ALL of the fight song. Then that might prove how tradition-protecting they are.
