I have a general question for the board: does anyone know which universities have clubs in New York City? I only know of a couple, but I'm sure there are more. Do these clubs only allow alumni of their schools to join? Other schools? What's the story?

I don't know about individual university's clubs; however, if you belong to The Square, you are joining with alumni of about 30 other top universities (including GU). They have many functions in NYC. See www.thesquare.com

Harvard, Yale and I believe Princeton have physical presence in NYC. I believe all 3 are near Grand Central.

Doesn't Cornell, too?

Just to clarify - are we talking about the dinner and social clubs that are "University Clubs" or alumni clubs which also serve the same function while limiting their membership to alumni?

Syracuse has one - its a Staten Island Pizza Hut - everyone who works there is an actual graduate of Syracuse.

Oh - i think its just Harvard, Yale, Cornell, and Princeton only then. There is also a University Club of NY which has nothing to do with anything collegiate what-so-ever.

I thought Penn and Williams also had clubs in New York. Penn has a club in Manhattan; it just celebrated its 10th anniversary. Dartmouth has one too....

For the most part you need to attend the named school or one of the affiliate schools to join one of the university clubs in NYC. G-Town is affiliated with the Cornell Club. Other affiliated schools at the Cornell Club include: Brown, Colgate, Duke, Notre Dame, Stanford and Tulane. Membership costs, which vary depending upon your geography and/or # of years post graduation, are actually relatively reasonable for NYC. As part of your membership you get full use of the club (bar, restaurants, gym (gym costs are extra) and hotel - some of the cheapest rooms in the city) and also get reciprocal memberships in a host of clubs throughout the world. I used to be a member, but dropped it b/c I never used it. For those that will, it’s a pretty good deal. Here’s the website: www.cornellclubnyc.com/index.html
