Well, I spent a beautiful morning at Gonzaga H.S. watching the Spring game. The highlights included (in no particular order) a 40 to 50 yard completed pass, a 48 to 49 yard field goal, and a smashed windshield. More on the windshield later....
While the defense still was superior, they did not control the offense as much as in the previous scrimmages. There were some excellent inside runs by Davis and Slayton, but it seemed to me that they were able to get outside a few times--that appears to be an improvement. There were also with some nice pass completions including an encouraging catch from the freshman tight end--he got hit after an over-the-middle catch and held on. Keith Allan was as fast as ever, but the pleasant surprise was Nick Cangelosi. He was finally healthy and looked very comfortable making some nice intermediate throws. He also showed some athleticism on a few plays. He is a much more conventional QB than Keith Allan, but I think that gives Coach 'U' (OC) some interesting options (no pun intended).
The long completion was thrown by the new QB (I've gotta learn his name, because he has some talent and can run well) and was caught by a converted LB, Mike Shotwell. It was a pretty play and the ball was in the air for a while. I had to check to be sure that Coach 'U' hadn't fallen asleep and let someone else call that play. The long field goal was dead center and kicked by Brad Scoffern, last season's punter. The battle for place kicker will be interesting next season. That battle will be fought between Scoffern and Eric Bjonerud, the windshield breaker. Yep, one of his successful XPs flew the fence, into the parking lot and caused an out-of-town parent to spend his Saturday afternoon getting a new windshield. Not easy on a Saturday.
Coach Benson seemed to end the game earlier than I would have expected. I guess he had seen all that he needed and didn't want to risk injuries. That awful carpet up on Kehoe has really taken its toll this spring. Several players were limping around out of uniform.
That's my take. Can't wait to see these kids in August.

Matt Bassuener is the new quarterback. He is pretty good and can run the ball with the best of them. At least thats what I have seen the few times I have watched.

If you mean the online roster on guhoyas then he is listed as number 42 although he wears the green 14 when they practice. Then again he is also listed as a defensive back so go figure. Maybe the coaches saw something and decided to quarterback him. He is a good height but needs to bulk up a little to look like the average quarterback. Hopefully he will help. I didn't see the spring game but I was there for two of the scrimmages and he looked like he is going to get playing time next season. If he continues getting better he might give Keith (or Nick) a challenge.
